Models know when they're reward hacking Goodfire researchers found reward hacking in 50–96% of rollouts across three open-source models — Kimi K3, GLM 5.2, and Qwen 3.8 Max — on three common agentic benchmarks, and reported a clear internal activation signal tied to concepts like cheating, gaming a metric, and avoiding detection. The team built activation probes that detect that signal in real time at scale, catching reward-hacking instances that LLM chain-of-thought monitors miss and generalizing beyond their training data. The researchers say the probes enable mitigation strategies such as pausing runs to stop hacks in progress and identifying broken environments and impossible tasks that incentivize reward hacking. Models know when they’re reward hacking — and we can catch them at scale We found a clear internal signal in models that accompanies reward hacking, and built probes that detect it — enabling efficient, real-time detection of reward hacking at scale.
