Anthropic's open standard for AI interoperability is gaining traction across major platforms, with blockchain-specific applications now emerging as a serious use case
Think of the Model Context Protocol as a universal remote for AI systems. Instead of every developer building a custom connection between an AI model and an external data source, MCP provides one standardized interface that works across the board. It is, in the words of its early advocates, the USB-C port for AI.
Anthropic introduced MCP on November 25, 2024, as an open-source standard hosted at modelcontextprotocol.io. The core idea is straightforward: give AI models like Claude a secure, consistent way to reach external data, whether that means a calendar, a company database, or a blockchain.
From enterprise software to blockchain wallets #
OpenAI, Google Cloud, Databricks, Oracle, and Stripe have all added MCP support, bringing the standard into enterprise environments where interoperability headaches are a daily reality.
The crypto-specific applications are where things get genuinely interesting for digital asset markets. Alchemy launched an MCP server around May 2025, enabling AI models to query blockchain data directly through the protocol. Coinbase followed with its Base MCP integration, which allows users to manage wallets and interact with on-chain activity through natural language interfaces.
Community infrastructure is also forming around these use cases. The mcp-crypto DAO has emerged as an ecosystem initiative specifically focused on supporting MCP’s integration with blockchain tooling.
What the next specification update signals #
A release candidate for the next MCP specification is scheduled for July 28, 2026. The planned upgrades include a stateless core architecture and enhanced authorization capabilities, both of which matter considerably for blockchain applications.
Stateless design means individual interactions do not depend on stored session history, which improves scalability and reduces points of failure. Enhanced authorization capabilities address one of the persistent concerns around AI agents interacting with financial systems: who actually controls what the agent can do. Tighter authorization frameworks mean users and developers can set more precise permission boundaries before an AI touches anything sensitive, including a crypto wallet.
Google Cloud has also issued specific security guidance for Web3 environments using MCP agents, a sign that major cloud providers are taking the protocol’s role in blockchain infrastructure seriously.
What this means for crypto investors and builders #
The cost efficiency angle matters too. Custom integration work is expensive. Every blockchain project that previously needed to build bespoke connections between its protocol and AI tools now has a shared standard to work from. That lowers development overhead, which effectively extends the runway for smaller teams building in the space.
The risk worth watching is fragmentation. Open standards have a way of spawning competing forks and incompatible extensions as adoption scales. MCP’s governance structure and how Anthropic manages the standard’s evolution alongside a growing contributor base will determine whether it stays genuinely universal or quietly fractures into enterprise, crypto, and consumer variants that share a name but not a specification.
