# Microsoft taps Mistral for European GPU capacity and AI models

Microsoft will invest billions in standing up new AI computing capacity inside Mistral that will be used to service sovereign AI customers in Europe while expanding its roster of AI models to include Mistral's latest, the [companies announced Tuesday](https://news.microsoft.com/source/2026/07/21/microsoft-and-mistral-expand-strategic-partnership-to-give-enterprises-and-regulated-industries-frontier-ai-they-can-control/?ref=thestack.technology).

The deal is an expansion of [an existing partnership between the two companies](https://www.thestack.technology/does-microsofts-mistral-ai-deal/) and b[uilds on the commitments Microsoft made to Europe last year](https://blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issues/2025/04/30/european-digital-commitments/?ref=thestack.technology) after intense scrutiny of its software licensing practices. Mistral intends to roll out Nvidia's latest Vera Rubin GPUs across its European data-center footprint, and Microsoft customers in Europe will be able to use that capacity to run Mistral's OCR 4.0 model in Microsoft Foundry and its open-weight Medium 3.5 model in both Foundry and Copilot Studio.
