Under the new accord, Microsoft will rent cloud and AI infrastructure directly from Mistral’s expanding network of European data centers. The deal helps Microsoft satisfy soaring demand for compute power on the continent, while offering European enterprises — particularly those in strictly regulated sectors like finance, defense, and healthcare — an alternative to U.S.-hosted infrastructure. Neither firm disclosed the exact financial terms or the precise volume of computing power involved. The French lab confirmed the deal significantly accelerates financing for Mistral Compute, its dedicated infrastructure arm. Founded three years ago, Mistral employs roughly 1,000 staff and is committing €4 billion ($4.6 billion) toward European data center buildouts, powered by thousands of next-generation NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs. The firm currently operates a facility outside Paris, with another under construction in Sweden. Mistral aims to secure 200 megawatts of capacity by 2027 and reach one gigawatt by 2030, an output roughly equivalent to a commercial nuclear reactor. The partnership directly addresses growing anxiety among European policymakers and business leaders regarding reliance on American tech giants. Concerns over technological independence intensified following recent U.S. regulatory pauses on foreign access to certain advanced AI models. “By putting Mistral’s models on Azure Local and on Mistral’s computational capacity, we can combine American and European technology and do it in a way that provides continuous and assured access,” Microsoft President Brad Smith said. “Europe should have access to the world’s most capable AI without compromising control over their data, operations, or digital future.” Beyond raw compute capacity, the deal expands the commercial availability of Mistral’s proprietary models across Microsoft’s software lineup. Developers can now build applications using Mistral’s new Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models. Medium* 3.5* has been directly integrated to power workplace AI assistants. Enterprise clients can run Mistral’s open models on their own local hardware, including fully air-gapped, disconnected configurations to guarantee strict data privacy. Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch noted that two-thirds of Mistral’s existing client base already utilizes Microsoft products. He emphasized that Microsoft’s global commercial footprint would help the Paris-based lab scale its market presence across Europe and worldwide. The agreement falls under Microsoft’s broader European Digital Commitments program, initiated in 2025 to expand compute access within the European Union. Microsoft confirmed the deal involves no new equity stake in Mistral.
