Microsoft Eyes History With $490 Billion Pop in Market Value

Microsoft Corp. is on track to record the largest one-day increase in market value for any stock in history, with shares soaring as much as 17% and adding $490 billion to its market capitalization. The surge follows the company's report that revenue for its Azure cloud unit surged 43% during the fiscal fourth quarter, the most since early 2022, while capital spending plans for 2026 remain unchanged. The gain eclipses Nvidia Corp.'s $440 billion addition after President Donald Trump's tariff pause announcement last year, according to Bloomberg-compiled data.

(Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. is on track to record the largest one-day increase in market value for any stock in history.

Shares of the Redmond, Washington-based company soared as much as 17%, adding $490 billion to its market capitalization as of 12:55 p.m. in New York. If that holds through the close it would eclipse Nvidia Corp.'s $440 billion addition, following President Donald Trump's announcement of a 90-day tariff last year, as the biggest ever, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Thursday's surge, the biggest intraday gain for the stock since October 2008, comes after the company reported that revenue for its Azure cloud unit surged 43% during the fiscal fourth quarter, the most since early 2022. Microsoft also said its capital spending plans for 2026 are unchanged.

The nearly $500 billion jump is larger than the market capitalization of roughly 96% of S&P 500 stocks, data compiled by Bloomberg show. It's also bigger than the combined value of the benchmark's 44 smallest members, which includes companies like Domino's Pizza Inc., Clorox Co. and Hasbro Inc.

Microsoft's one-day add in value also dwarfs many of the world's other equity markets. South Africa, Turkey, Finland and Vietnam all have total stock market values that are less than what the software maker is set to add on Thursday.
