July 15, 2026, (Inside AI) — Microsoft has become the first hyperscale cloud provider to deploy 3M’s Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) technology in its Azure data centers, the companies announced today. The strategic partnership also sees 3M adopting Microsoft’s AI and digital platforms to overhaul its enterprise operations.
The deal merges Microsoft’s cloud and AI infrastructure with 3M’s materials science expertise to accelerate AI adoption and fortify the physical networks underpinning cloud and AI workloads. It marks a significant convergence of optical connectivity innovation and enterprise AI transformation.
EBO technology replaces the direct physical contact of traditional fiber connectors with an expanded beam optical interface. This design makes connections faster to install, more tolerant of contamination, and easier to maintain. In dense, high-volume data center environments, it reduces the need for frequent cleaning and inspection while maintaining reliable optical performance.
Microsoft’s early trials showed EBO can reduce network deployment timelines in certain settings and deliver strong signal performance amid dust and routine handling. 3M is scaling production to meet surging demand from hyperscalers building AI infrastructure, leveraging decades of precision manufacturing. The company also helped establish the EBO Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) to promote industry standardization.

On the enterprise side, 3M will embed Microsoft’s AI into customer service, finance, sales, and marketing. A flagship initiative involves the Microsoft Frontier Company deploying engineers to help 3M’s Global Business Services team automate customer order management. An AI agent-driven workflow will assist with credit checks, delinquency assessments, and system updates, with human-in-the-loop controls and a custom monitoring dashboard.
This solution is expected to slash manual effort, improve process speed and consistency, and accelerate cash flow. It frees staff for higher-value work while enabling scalable, auditable operations.

Analysts note that such innovations are critical as AI clusters grow to tens of thousands of GPUs, where even minor network downtime can cost millions.
However, EBO faces competition from other advanced connectivity solutions like co-packaged optics and hollow-core fiber, which promise even lower latency. 3M’s success will hinge on demonstrating cost-effectiveness and reliability at scale. The MSA effort could accelerate adoption, but industry-wide standards battles are common. Meanwhile, 3M’s internal AI push mirrors a trend of traditional manufacturers leveraging generative AI for back-office efficiency, though change management and data readiness remain hurdles.
The companies plan continued bench-to-bench engineering collaboration, targeting reliability, deployment speed, density, and scalability across Microsoft’s data center and device ecosystem. This could extend 3M’s materials science into areas like thermal management or advanced adhesives for AI hardware.
While financial terms were not disclosed, the alliance underscores the symbiotic relationship between cloud giants and industrial innovators in the AI era. As Microsoft races to expand Azure’s footprint, partnerships like this one aim to shave weeks off data center deployment cycles—a crucial edge in the hyperscale arms race.
