# Microsoft bets on AI agents and hybrid intelligence to reshape Windows 11

Windows 11 is becoming a runtime for autonomous agents that split work between free local models and paid cloud ones

At a Windows and Surface event in San Francisco on October 7, 2026, [Microsoft](https://cryptobriefing.com/markets/microsoft/) laid out plans to turn Windows 11 into an **agentic operating system**: a platform where AI agents act on your behalf, guided by what Microsoft calls hybrid intelligence.

The core idea behind hybrid intelligence is routing. Windows can send some AI tasks to models running locally on the device. Other tasks go to the cloud. Every request handled on your laptop is a request Microsoft, or its customers, does not have to pay a data center to process. Microsoft framed this as a way to cut reliance on costly cloud computing while keeping the security and control standards that enterprise customers expect.

Shrinking models is a big part of making local AI practical. Microsoft pointed to [MAI](https://cryptobriefing.com/markets/mimatic/) Code 1.1 Flash as an example: a model reduced to approximately 80% of its size, with 137B parameters and 6.8B active parameters. A model with 137B total parameters that only activates 6.8B at a time can, in principle, behave like a large model while doing the work of a much smaller one.

The most concrete enterprise news was Microsoft Execution Containers, or MXC. The feature is now generally available on Windows 11. MXC lets users run compliant applications in sandboxes, giving IT departments a way to let agents work while limiting how much damage a misstep could cause.

Copilot is getting broader powers too. Microsoft highlighted local context access, meaning the assistant can draw on information sitting on the device, along with permission-based actions. GitHub Copilot enhancements include local context access, expanded actions and models for Copilot+ PCs, with experimental features launching in October. Microsoft presented GitHub Copilot as a showcase for Windows as a secure runtime for autonomous agents.

Microsoft showed off the Surface Laptop Ultra and a set of related devices powered by [NVIDIA](https://cryptobriefing.com/markets/nvidia/)’s RTX [Spark](https://cryptobriefing.com/markets/spark-2/). Pre-orders are open now.
