Microsoft and Meta face investor scrutiny over AI spending as combined tech capex heads toward $1 trillion

Microsoft and Meta face investor scrutiny over AI spending this week as combined capital expenditure across Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon is projected to hit roughly $700 billion in 2026 and exceed $1 trillion in 2027, with Moody's warning that elevated spending could jeopardize credit quality for major tech companies including Microsoft and Meta.

The two tech giants report earnings this week with investors laser-focused on whether massive AI infrastructure bets will actually pay off

Microsoft and Meta are about to have a very uncomfortable conversation with Wall Street. Both companies report earnings this week, and the spotlight isn’t on revenue growth or user metrics. It’s on how much money they’re lighting on fire building AI infrastructure, and whether any of it will generate returns before investors lose their collective patience.

The numbers are genuinely staggering. Combined capital expenditure across Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon is expected to hit roughly $700 billion in 2026, with projections for 2027 exceeding $1 trillion.

The Alphabet warning shot #

Investors already showed their hand when Alphabet reported record profits for Q2 2026. The reward for hitting all-time earnings? A stock decline of more than 7% after the company raised its capex forecast by $15 billion.

Now it’s Microsoft and Meta’s turn to walk that same tightrope. Meta’s capex outlook has ballooned from an initial range of $115 to $135 billion to an updated range of $125 to $145 billion. Microsoft’s target sits between $80 and $120 billion. Both figures represent a fundamental transformation from asset-light software businesses into something that looks a lot more like industrial companies.

Moody’s enters the chat #

The spending spree has caught the attention of credit rating agencies. Moody’s cautioned in late July that elevated capital expenditure levels could jeopardize credit quality for major tech companies including Microsoft and Meta.

Moody’s warning extends beyond just Microsoft and Meta. Oracle and CoreWeave, which has become a major player in AI-focused cloud infrastructure, also face potential credit quality pressure from elevated spending.

The crypto angle nobody’s talking about #

There’s an unexpected beneficiary lurking in all this infrastructure spending: Bitcoin miners. As tech giants scramble to build out data center capacity for AI workloads, they’re increasingly turning to companies that already operate massive computing facilities.

Bitcoin mining operations are pivoting toward high-performance computing collaborations with firms like Microsoft and Meta. The logic is sound. Miners already have the real estate, the power contracts, and the cooling infrastructure that AI workloads demand. Converting mining capacity into AI compute is a faster path to meeting demand than building from scratch.

Investors watching this week’s earnings calls should focus less on the headline capex numbers and more on two specific things: the revenue growth rate of AI-specific products relative to the spending increase, and any signals about when these companies expect capital intensity to plateau. Without a credible path to peak capex, the Alphabet playbook, where even record profits can’t protect the stock, is likely to repeat itself.
