Micron’s $50B Boise expansion reshapes its hometown into a semiconductor powerhouse

Micron Technology is investing $50 billion to build two DRAM fabrication plants in Boise, Idaho, with equipment arrival slated for late 2026 and initial production by mid-2027, backed by $6.4 billion in CHIPS and Science Act funding. The project, which includes cleanrooms totaling about 600,000 square feet per facility, is expected to create over 17,000 jobs and support Micron's goal of producing 40% of its DRAM output in the U.S. by 2035.

The memory chip giant is building what amounts to a small city in Idaho, backed by billions in federal CHIPS Act funding and a bet on AI-driven demand

Boise, Idaho, is not the first place most people think of when they imagine the future of American chipmaking. That’s about to change in a big way.

Micron Technology is pouring $50 billion into its hometown to build two massive fabrication plants dedicated to advanced DRAM memory chips. Each facility will house roughly 600,000 square feet of cleanroom space, and company representatives have described the overall footprint as something closer to a self-sustaining “little city” than a factory complex.

The expansion includes utilities, water treatment facilities, parking structures, office buildings, a technician training center, and even a daycare.

Progress on the first fab is reportedly running ahead of schedule. Equipment is set to arrive in late 2026, with initial DRAM wafer production expected by mid-2027. Work on the second fab is already underway, targeting completion by late 2028.

The project is expected to generate more than 17,000 jobs in Idaho, counting both direct hires and the ripple effects through the local economy.

Micron has committed $75 million over ten years through what it calls its Idaho Community Investment Framework, funding STEM education and workforce training programs. Part of that effort includes a partnership with the College of Western Idaho to build out a pipeline of technicians who can actually operate the equipment inside those cleanrooms.

The CHIPS Act connection #

Micron’s Boise expansion is part of a broader US manufacturing strategy underpinned by $6.4 billion in funding from the CHIPS and Science Act, the landmark 2022 legislation designed to reshore semiconductor production after years of watching fabrication capacity concentrate in East Asia.

Micron’s stated goal is to produce 40% of its DRAM output in the US by 2035.

Why DRAM, and why now #

DRAM, or dynamic random-access memory, is the short-term memory your computer uses to juggle tasks in real time, and it’s become increasingly critical as AI workloads explode. Micron is one of only three companies in the world that manufactures DRAM at scale, alongside Samsung and SK Hynix.

The Boise fabs are designed specifically for advanced DRAM nodes. Samsung and SK Hynix have their own expansion plans, including facilities in Texas and Indiana respectively.
