The semiconductor giant's venture arm is deepening its bet on artificial intelligence startups as memory demand surges alongside AI workloads.
Micron Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of memory chip giant Micron Technology, is putting fresh capital to work in the AI space with a fund targeting investments in emerging artificial intelligence technologies.
The move comes as Micron positions itself at the intersection of two colliding forces: the explosion in AI compute demand and the semiconductor hardware that makes it all possible.
Micron’s venture playbook #
Micron Ventures has been operating a $300M fund focused on early-stage deep tech founders working across sustainable computing infrastructure, advanced AI, and machine learning solutions.
The portfolio already reads like a who’s who of enterprise AI infrastructure. It includes SambaNova Systems, a company building purpose-built AI hardware and software platforms, along with Weka, which specializes in high-performance data platforms. Paperspace, another portfolio company, provides cloud-based GPU infrastructure for machine learning workloads.
The bigger picture: $250 billion and counting #

Micron, as one of only three major DRAM manufacturers in the world alongside Samsung and SK Hynix, is positioned to capture a significant share of that demand. The venture fund serves as the scouting operation for this larger campaign, identifying which startups and technologies will drive the next wave of memory consumption.
The company’s Fund II, which closed with approximately $200M in commitments announced in 2022, demonstrated growing institutional confidence in Micron’s venture approach.
Why corporate venture capital matters in AI #
Micron’s investment focus on sustainable computing infrastructure is worth noting. As AI data centers consume increasingly staggering amounts of energy, startups that can deliver the same computational performance with lower power consumption have an obvious market advantage. Memory efficiency sits at the heart of that challenge, since data movement between processors and memory accounts for a significant portion of total system energy use.
The venture arm’s portfolio extends beyond pure AI plays into adjacent areas like robotics and sustainable technologies.
The competitive landscape makes this kind of strategic investing increasingly important. SK Hynix has built a dominant position in high-bandwidth memory chips used in Nvidia’s AI accelerators. Samsung is investing heavily in its own AI memory technologies.
