On Monday, the company announced it is rolling out Meta AI within Threads DMs globally, letting users share posts, images, links, and videos directly with the assistant and ask follow-up questions, all without leaving the app. The real story isn't the convenience. It's that a surveillance machine now has a permanent seat in your private conversations, and nobody in the press is asking what it's hearing.
TechCrunch framed the move as a competitive play: Meta wants to "keep users within its ecosystem" and away from rivals like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Fair enough — follow the money, and the incentive is obvious. But the outlet buried the privacy question entirely. 9to5Mac went further, editorializing the integration as a "smart move" and calling AI in public feeds "spammy, annoying, and, well, public" — as though moving the bot into private messages solves the problem rather than compounding it.
