# Meta gives Quest an AI assistant and a less annoying home screen

**The software push makes Quest more computer-like as VR shipments shrink and Reality Labs keeps burning billions.**

Quest remains the leading headset platform, so Meta's interface choices shape how VR developers reach users. The harder question is whether easier controls and embedded AI can revive usage in a shrinking market.

[Mark Zuckerberg (@finkd)](https://x.com/finkd?ref=runtimewire) is pushing [Meta](https://meta.com/?ref=runtimewire) Quest closer to a general-purpose computer with a package of interface, input, AI and security changes that [Meta detailed on August 25](https://www.meta.com/blog/explore-the-latest-meta-quest-updates/?ref=runtimewire). The work targets a basic problem for headsets: every awkward menu, dropped gesture and forced reach for a controller gives the wearer another reason to take the device off.

That makes the update a revealing chapter in Zuckerberg's long bet on computing beyond phones. He founded Facebook in 2004 after studying computer science at Harvard and still sets [Meta's overall direction and product strategy](https://investor.atmeta.com/leadership-and-governance/?ref=runtimewire). Quest now needs to prove that years of spending can produce an operating system people want to inhabit, rather than hardware they use for a game and return to a shelf.

The executive carrying that bet is [Andrew "Boz" Bosworth (@boztank)](https://x.com/boztank?ref=runtimewire), Meta's chief technology officer and head of Reality Labs. Bosworth joined Facebook in 2006, created News Feed and built early anti-abuse systems before taking leadership of Meta's AR and VR organization in 2017. His product arc has moved from organizing a social network's information to organizing the windows floating inside a headset.

### Quest starts behaving like a computer

The centerpiece is [Navigator](https://www.meta.com/en-gb/help/quest/133727602066940/?ref=runtimewire), a redesigned landing experience that places the app library, recording, calls, playback, notifications and ongoing activities within easier reach. Users can prioritize favorite apps and sort them into folders. Meta is also replacing Horizon Feed as the default entry point, a rollout that [began with Horizon OS version 85](https://communityforums.atmeta.com/discussions/News_and_Announcements/horizon-feed-being-replaced-by-navigator-starting-in-v85/1363701/?ref=runtimewire).

Navigator puts the app library in front of users at startup and gives them more control over how apps are organized. The redesign treats the home screen as a place for returning to work and activities, rather than a menu users pass through on the way to a game.

Meta also added improved hand tracking for grabbing and moving panels, voice control paired with head gaze, and offline voice dictation. Windows can snap to nearby walls and dynamically resize as they move. An experimental surface keyboard and touchpad turns a flat table or desk into an input area, while session restoration reopens browser panels where the user left them.

Together, those features address the small frictions that separate a game device from a working computer. A headset meant for several hours of work, media and communication cannot require a controller for every menu or force users to rebuild their workspace after each break.

The media layer is moving in the same direction. Quest's Gallery now opens photos and videos in 3D, and users can upload images through the Horizon mobile app. Meta says [FrameSync](https://developers.meta.com/horizon/blog/framesync-meta-horizon-os/?ref=runtimewire) reduces visual lag by keeping rendered frames aligned with head movement. Meta has not published independent measurements for the improvement, so its practical effect will depend on the application, device and user.

### Meta AI gets a headset-sized job

[Meta AI](https://www.meta.com/en-gb/help/quest/1008196844074415/?ref=runtimewire) has moved out of Quest's experimental settings and can navigate the device, operating system, store and apps through voice commands, according to Meta. The broad availability claim comes with a narrower footnote: Meta AI remains opt-in, English-only and limited to the United States and Canada.

Quest gives Zuckerberg's personal AI strategy a physical interface. An assistant inside a headset can see the current software context, reduce menu navigation and eventually mediate how users find apps or complete tasks. Quest represents the controlled version of that thesis, with Meta owning the hardware, operating system, assistant and store.

That integration can make the headset easier to use. It also places Meta AI between developers and their customers. If voice becomes a primary navigation layer, the assistant's recommendations and supported actions will influence which apps get opened and which remain buried in the library.

Meta rounded out the release with practical security and storage changes: a purple indicator when an app accesses the microphone, camera or location; selective photo and video sharing; browser passkeys; automatic app offloading; and on-device checks that compare sideloaded apps against known malware. The customizable action button is limited to Quest 3S, while Meta does not specify one supported-device list covering every feature in the package.

### Software has to carry a difficult market

The timing reflects pressure on the category. [Counterpoint Research estimated](https://counterpointresearch.com/en/insights/global-xr-ar-vr-headsets-market-share-quarterly/?ref=runtimewire) that global VR headset shipments fell 17% year over year in the first quarter of 2026. Meta still led the broader AR and VR headset market with an estimated 58% shipment share, down from 71% a year earlier.

Competitors are attacking many of the same usability problems. In April, Google added [wall-pinned apps, session restoration, hand-tracking improvements and experimental 2D-to-3D conversion](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/platforms/android/android-xr-immersive-features-update-april-2026/?ref=runtimewire) to Android XR on Samsung's Galaxy XR. Voice assistants, persistent windows and natural input are becoming baseline features for spatial-computing platforms rather than durable points of differentiation.

Meta can afford a long contest, though Reality Labs remains expensive. Meta's 2025 annual report materials say the segment reduced operating profit by approximately $19.19 billion that year, and the supplied research says Meta expects Reality Labs losses in 2026 to remain similar. The figures cover the broader Reality Labs business, not Quest software alone.

Zuckerberg and Bosworth are using software polish to stretch the utility of the hardware already in users' hands. Better navigation, hands-free controls and AI assistance are sensible product work. The business test is whether they increase retention, app purchases and time spent inside Quest. Meta does not break those figures out, leaving Reality Labs' operating loss as the clearest public measure of how much patience Zuckerberg is still buying for the bet.
