Meta just walked away from a flagship corporate clean energy pledge because building AI data centers requires power that actually works—and fossil fuels are what keeps the lights on when the green virtue-signaling stops paying off.
The Facebook and Instagram parent confirmed Friday it has withdrawn from RE100, a UK-based Climate Group initiative that pressures major corporations to source 100 percent of their electricity from renewables. Meta joined the pledge in 2016 and had claimed it met its target on an annualized basis since 2020. But that was before the AI arms race demanded round-the-clock, reliable electricity at massive scale.
Climate Group told Recharge News, which first reported the departure, that Meta "is no longer able to meet the technical criteria due to investments made in new gas power." A Meta spokesperson told AFP the company is still committed to matching its electricity use with clean energy and that leaving RE100 was a "mutual" decision.
Mutual or not, the numbers tell the story. Meta has committed to funding at least 10 new natural gas power plants since last year, including 10 to power its Hyperion data center in Louisiana alone. That's not a bridge fuel transition. That's a fossil fuel buildout.
Europe Says leaned into the environmental damage—methane leaks from drilling, nitric oxides, sulfur, mercury, particulates, and groundwater contamination from fracking. All real costs, and all costs that tend to land on the communities near the wells and plants, not on Meta's campus in Menlo Park. Engadget, meanwhile, noted the convenient accounting trick that let Meta claim clean energy compliance in the first place: companies buy "energy attribute certificates" to offset their fossil fuel use on paper. Burn gas, buy a certificate, call it green. The whole system was a ledger trick from the start.
Meta isn't alone in its pivot. Microsoft signed a deal with Chevron last month for natural gas to a West Texas data center, and Google has been linked to similar partnerships. The AI buildout is forcing Big Tech's hand, and the green pledges—always voluntary, always PR-friendly—are the first thing to go.
The real stake for ordinary Americans: utilities are bringing new gas plants online with Big Tech money, and ratepayers and taxpayers are the ones who subsidize the infrastructure, absorb the pollution, and fund the green mandates these companies just admitted they can't meet. Corporate climate pledges were a cost of doing business in the ESG era. Now that AI revenue is on the line, the pledges are gone and the gas is flowing.
The open question is who pays for the next round of infrastructure—and whether the same politicians who mandated the green transition will hold Big Tech to the rules they imposed on everyone else.
