- Meta said Meta AI will begin rolling out globally in Threads DMs on July 27, allowing users to share posts, images, links and videos with the chatbot. [4] Meta is rolling out its Meta AI assistant inside Threads’ direct messages worldwide, adding a private chatbot interface to the social network after testing Meta AI in public posts in a handful of markets.[1]
Users can send the assistant Threads posts, images, links and videos, then ask questions or request additional context. The integration brings Threads in line with Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, where Meta AI is already available through messaging interfaces.[1]
Private inbox, different privacy rules #
The conversation is private from other Threads users, but it is not equivalent to an end-to-end encrypted personal chat. Meta says information sent directly to its generative AI features may be retained, used to personalize responses and reviewed by automated systems or people. The company also says interactions shared with its AI may be used to train and improve its models.[2]
Meta did not announce a Threads version of Incognito Chat, the temporary mode available in WhatsApp and the standalone Meta AI app that the company says it cannot read and does not save. It also did not specify a Threads-specific retention period or deletion setting.[3]
The company described Monday’s release as global but did not list individual countries, eligible account types or age restrictions. Threads originally limited its native DMs to users aged 18 and older, and Meta did not say whether the AI rollout changes that rule.[1][5]
Meta has not disclosed plans to place sponsored responses or other advertiser integrations inside the Threads chat. However, since December 16, 2025, the company has used interactions with its AI features as signals for content and ad recommendations in most regions. Meta says sensitive topics including health, religion, sexual orientation and political views are excluded from ad targeting.[4]
For younger users, Meta has introduced age-appropriate response rules and parental alerts for some Meta AI conversations involving possible suicide or self-harm. Monday’s announcement did not detail which teen safeguards or parental controls apply specifically inside Threads DMs.[6]
