China's regulatory authority forced the AI startup and Meta to unwind their deal, raising fresh questions about cross-border tech acquisitions in an era of US-China tension.
Manus, the Singapore-based AI startup that briefly looked like it would become Meta’s next big bet, is going back to life on its own. The company announced on August 11 that it will resume independent operations after Chinese regulators killed its sale to Mark Zuckerberg’s empire.
The deal was worth roughly $2B. It lasted about four months before Beijing said no.
How the deal fell apart #
Meta and Manus first announced the acquisition on December 29, 2025, a move that would have given Meta a significant foothold in the AI agent space. Then came April 27, 2026. China’s National Development and Reform Commission, the NDRC, stepped in and blocked the transaction outright. The regulator didn’t just raise concerns or ask for concessions. It instructed both parties to withdraw from the deal entirely.
The reasoning tracks with a broader pattern. Manus has roots in China, and Beijing cited concerns over technology transfer in the context of rising US-China tensions in tech industries.
By May 2026, Manus had completed its operational separation from Meta. All data sharing between the two companies was halted.
But the cleanup isn’t over for users. Manus has notified its customer base that any data created after the December 29, 2025 acquisition announcement must be deleted to comply with jurisdictional regulations.
The geopolitical chessboard #
Manus sits in a particularly awkward spot on this chessboard. The company is incorporated in Singapore, which technically makes it a Southeast Asian entity. But its Chinese origins meant Beijing still considered the deal within its regulatory jurisdiction. That’s a significant precedent. It suggests that even relocating headquarters to a neutral country may not insulate AI startups from the reach of Chinese regulators, provided the technology or founding team traces back to the mainland.
What independence looks like now #
Before the halted acquisition, Manus employed about 100 workers, mainly in Singapore. The company spent roughly five months in a corporate limbo, partially integrated with one of the world’s largest technology companies, only to be told to reverse course. The mandatory data deletion adds another layer of complexity, potentially disrupting service continuity for users who adopted the platform during the transition period.
Manus now returns to the market as an independent AI agent company with a very public $2B valuation stamp.
