macOS 27, also known as Golden Gate, is coming this fall with a variety of improvements for the Mac. Here are five new macOS Golden Gate features I’ve been loving so far.

#1: File name suggestions #

Apple Intelligence powers a convenient new file management feature in macOS 27: file and folder name suggestions.

When saving a file, your Mac can now suggest a name based on the contents of the file. This is possible because Apple Intelligence is able to analyze and understand its contents.

Suggestions also work for folder names, so you can have auto-suggested names based on the files inside a folder too.

#2: Swipe to refresh #

The first Mac with a touchscreen is coming this fall, but even without a MacBook Ultra, I’ve been enjoying the new support for ‘swipe to refresh’ in macOS 27.

Like in iOS and iPadOS, you can now swipe down in apps like Safari and Mail to force an app refresh.

Maybe it’s just because I work from my iPad Pro a lot, but swipe to refresh is a key gesture I use all the time, so it’s been great to have it added to the Mac.

#3: iPhone Mirroring improvements #

iPhone Mirroring improves in a few key ways in macOS 27. Perhaps most notable is that you can now resize mirrored iPhone apps into larger, iPad-like layouts. This upgrade is no doubt a thinly veiled iPhone Ultra hint, but it’s great to have on the Mac regardless.

Control Center is also now accessible via iPhone Mirroring, fixing an odd limitation in macOS Tahoe.

#4: Video support in Apple Podcasts #

Earlier this year, iOS and iPadOS got much-improved video features in Apple Podcasts. But the Mac missed out. macOS 27 remedies that oversight, offering all of the great video podcast features already available on other platforms. This means you can now watch video podcasts with full playback controls, Picture in Picture, and download support, and switch seamlessly between audio and video.

It’s still early days for Apple Podcasts’ growing video library, but bringing proper video support to the Mac is a welcome improvement.

#5: Siri and Spotlight upgrades #

Siri AI is a huge improvement in basically every way over the previous Siri. It can do more, in more places, and is just as valuable on the Mac as the iPhone.

Having Siri and Spotlight integrated in macOS 27 has made me use CMD+Space more than ever. And now that both Siri and the Mac’s underlying Spotlight search engine work better than before, these core macOS features are easily among my highlights this year.
