This new industry consortium will turn the emerging x402 protocol into a stable standard for internet‑native payments across AI agents and web applications.\n\nAnother day, another AI standard arrives under the Linux Foundation umbrella. This latest AI initiative, the [x402 Foundation](https://x402.org/), will oversee the governance, interoperability, and reference implementations for x402.\n\nThis is the open payment standard built on the ancient, but largely unused, HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code. Originally developed by [Coinbase as an open protocol for stablecoin](https://www.coinbase.com/developer-platform/discover/launches/x402) payments over HTTP, x402 is designed to let websites, APIs, and autonomous agents request and settle payments in line with normal web traffic, without relying on third-party card networks.\n\nAt a high level, x402 enables a server to say, “pay first, then access the resource,” and lets the client respond programmatically without creating an account or using a traditional checkout flow. That makes it useful for API calls, paid content, and machine-to-machine transactions. Whether you’re comfortable with an automated payment system that takes people out of the equation is another matter.\n\nBusinesses, unsurprisingly, love it. Rishin Sharma, head of AI growth at the [Solana Foundation](https://solana.org/), said, “Open payment standards like x402 are the starting point for building an agentic economy.” Peyton Rice, general manager of AWS Payments and Fraud Prevention, added, “AI agents are becoming first-class participants in digital commerce, and they need a payments layer as open and interoperable as the internet itself. The x402 Foundation embodies that principle for the agentic era, proposing an open protocol for AI agents to transact programmatically, built on what customers want now, and extensible to what customers will need in the future.”\n\nMind you, this has been a problem for years. As Marc Andreessen, Netscape’s creator, said, “So [I think [Netscape’s] original sin was that we couldn’t actually build economics](https://economyofbits.substack.com/p/marc-andreessens-original-sin), which is to say money, at the core of the internet.”\n\nDecades later, x402 is trying to do just that. Now x402 is transforming from a developer-led initiative into a formally stewarded standard with neutral governance and a roadmap shaped by multiple stakeholders. The new foundation will coordinate technical working groups to evolve the protocol, define compliance and interoperability profiles, and maintain open-source SDKs and gateways that make it easier for both legacy web services and AI-native platforms to integrate x402 into their payment flows.\n\nIn practice, x402-enabled services can respond to an HTTP request with a 402 status indicating “payment required,” along with a machine-readable description of the payment terms. An AI agent or browser can then perform an on-chain or off-chain stablecoin payment. The transaction is typically made in [Circle’s USD Coin (USDC)](https://www.circle.com/usdc). This is done over a facilitator network, which requires a cryptographic proof of payment. If the transaction fails. The x402 protocol then tries again.\n\nX402’s founder, Eric Reppel, describes it as “[the HTTP of money](https://x.com/programmer/status/1981854725470670861): a universally accepted, neutral, core primitive to help make the internet ready for the AI era.” Its supporters maintain it can unlock new business models beyond ads and subscriptions by enabling tiny, automatic payments between software services. Well, we’ll see.\n\nThat said, the foundation’s messaging heavily targets the emerging AI economy. As more AI agents act autonomously—fetching data, calling APIs, chaining multiple services together—they need a way to pay other services directly, at machine speed and human-scale prices. x402’s per-request payment semantics and stablecoin settlement are pitched as a solution to the growing tension between traditional subscription/billing models and highly dynamic, usage-based AI workloads.\n\nBy standardizing x402 under the Linux Foundation, backers view payments between agents and APIs as a core internet function rather than a proprietary feature. Despite growing enthusiasm, it’s not all smooth sailing for the x402 Foundation. There are concerns both about its security and its lack of identity verification. That’s potentially a nasty double whammy.\n\nFor AI developers and digital businesses, however, the promise is compelling. Stay tuned. We’ll soon see if it can overcome its technical weaknesses to incorporate AI money transactions to the net.", "url": "https://wpnews.pro/news/linux-foundation-launches-x402-foundation-to-standardize-internet-native-for-ai", "canonical_source": "https://techstrong.ai/articles/linux-foundation-launches-x402-foundation-to-standardize-internet-native-payments-for-ai-agents/", "published_at": "2026-07-15 17:08:12+00:00", "updated_at": "2026-07-15 17:18:05.071580+00:00", "lang": "en", "topics": ["artificial-intelligence", "ai-agents", "ai-infrastructure", "ai-policy"], "entities": ["Linux Foundation", "x402 Foundation", "Coinbase", "Solana Foundation", "AWS Payments and Fraud Prevention", "Circle", "Eric Reppel", "Marc Andreessen"], "alternates": {"html": "https://wpnews.pro/news/linux-foundation-launches-x402-foundation-to-standardize-internet-native-for-ai", "markdown": "https://wpnews.pro/news/linux-foundation-launches-x402-foundation-to-standardize-internet-native-for-ai.md", "text": "https://wpnews.pro/news/linux-foundation-launches-x402-foundation-to-standardize-internet-native-for-ai.txt", "jsonld": "https://wpnews.pro/news/linux-foundation-launches-x402-foundation-to-standardize-internet-native-for-ai.jsonld"}}
