LG, NPS bring AI into pension fund management

LG AI Research said Friday it is partnering with South Korea's National Pension Service to develop AI tools for pension fund management, starting with a currency-movement analysis service built on LG's Exaone Business Intelligence financial AI agent. The National Pension Service plans to test the currency-analysis service before expanding AI use to other areas of fund management, aiming to strengthen investment decisions, improve operational efficiency and raise long-term returns. LG AI Research said Exaone BI is already used by London Stock Exchange Group, Koscom and Kiwoom Securities and analyzes about 8,000 companies listed in South Korea and the US each day.

LG AI Research said Friday it is teaming up with the National Pension Service to develop AI tools for pension fund management, beginning with a service designed to analyze currency movements.

The two signed an agreement at LG AI Research's headquarters in Seoul to combine the company's artificial intelligence technology with the pension fund's investment expertise and improve investment research and decision-making.

“AI is reshaping the paradigm across industries,” Kang Chang-nam, managing director of investment operations at the pension service, said in a statement. “We will use AI to enhance the expertise and efficiency of our investment operations.”

Lee Hwa-young, head of business development at LG AI Research, underscored the institute's commitment to advancing AI adoption in the public sector.

“LG AI Research’s financial AI technology has already earned recognition from global investors,” Lee said. “We intend to create a leading model for AI adoption in the public sector.”

Their first project will use Exaone Business Intelligence, LG AI Research’s financial AI agent, to process macroeconomic indicators, news, research reports and internal pension fund data, the institute said. The system will generate forecasts and analysis tailored to foreign-exchange markets and the fund’s investment operations.

The National Pension Service plans to test the currency-analysis service before expanding AI use to other areas of fund management. It aims to strengthen investment decisions, improve operational efficiency and raise long-term returns.

LG AI Research said Exaone BI is already used in services operated by London Stock Exchange Group, Koscom and Kiwoom Securities. The platform analyzes about 8,000 companies listed in South Korea and the US each day, providing predictive scores and commentary designed to match the work of financial analysts.

The research unit has also worked with global institutional investors, including the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, and has secured a series of contracts in the sector, it added.

Both organizations said reliability and safety would be central to the project as they seek to broaden the use of AI in pension fund management.
