# LG Electronics wins Korea's first Nvidia liquid cooling certification as AI data centers hit a heat wall

LG's Nvidia certification is not a small appliance-company side quest. It is a hardware story about heat, power and who gets trusted inside the next wave of AI data centers. LG said on July 27 that its 600kW-class coolant distribution unit, or CDU, had received Nvidia's final quality certification. That makes LG the first Korean company to clear the process for this category of liquid cooling gear.

The unit sits between the facility cooling system and the chips doing the work. It circulates coolant through cold plates attached to GPUs and CPUs, then pulls that heat away before the rack turns into an expensive problem. It is not glamorous hardware. But without it, the most powerful AI racks don't make much sense.

## Why Nvidia's approval matters

Nvidia's own DGX GB200 rack-scale system guide puts an NVL72 rack at approximately 120kW of power consumption, with 72 Blackwell GPUs and 36 Grace CPUs packed into one rack-scale design. A rack like that is beyond ordinary server-room assumptions. Once rack density crosses roughly 30kW, Data Center Engineering has noted, air-handling alone stops being enough and the heat exchange has to move closer to the silicon.

That is where LG wants to be. The company says its certified CDU can control coolant temperature within plus or minus 0.25 degrees Celsius and uses redundant pumps and power systems to keep cooling running during equipment failures. It also includes virtual sensors and leak detection. Those are dry details. They are also exactly the details a hyperscaler cares about when a single rack can carry millions of dollars of processors.

Certification is not a marketing badge. Nvidia's approval tells data center operators buying Nvidia-based AI server racks that LG's CDU has passed the qualification work needed to sit in that stack. You don't experiment casually here. A coolant leak next to Blackwell GPUs is a business interruption with a brutal parts bill attached - not a repair ticket.

The approved supplier list narrows the field before the bidding even starts. LG still has to win contracts, deliver at scale and prove it can support customers outside Korea. But the company can now walk into those talks with something more useful than a product brochure. It has Nvidia's nod.

## LG's bigger bet

Frankly, this is also a cleaner story about LG's reinvention than another speech about connected homes. LG built its name in televisions, refrigerators and washing machines, but its growth pitch has been moving toward business customers for years. At a January 7 press briefing reported through LG's own newsroom and PRNewswire, the company said businesses including B2B, webOS and direct-to-consumer channels rose from about 29 percent of total revenue in 2021 to 45 percent in the second half of 2025, while their share of operating profit rose from 21 percent to about 90 percent.

That is a hard pivot. Consumer hardware is still there, and it still matters, but the profit mix is telling you where management wants the company to go. AI data center cooling fits that direction better than it might first appear. HVAC, heat transfer, precision temperature control. Those are LG businesses already.

LG is calling its package a Chip to Chiller solution, meaning the CDU, cold plates at the server level and the chillers that sit at building scale. The phrase is corporate, but the idea is practical. If you're building a GPU cluster, buying one joined-up thermal system from a vendor with existing HVAC manufacturing depth is easier than stitching together every piece yourself.

The company is also trying to move before the market settles. LG said the global AI data center cooling market is expected to grow about 26 percent a year and reach roughly $133.5 billion by 2034, about 185 trillion won. It plans to seek Nvidia certification for larger 1MW, 2.5MW and 4MW CDU models after the 600kW unit. That is the part to watch. A 600kW approval gets LG in the room, but megawatt-class systems are where the biggest AI campuses are heading.

There is still execution risk. LG has said it is pursuing CDU supply for projects including LG CNS AI data centers, and it has pointed to earlier data center cooling references in North America and Indonesia. Those are useful starts, not proof that global cloud buyers will hand over the next large wave of orders.

Still, the direction is clear. AI infrastructure is forcing a cooling reset, and Nvidia's rack designs make that visible in kilowatts, not theory. LG has just earned a place in that reset. Now it has to turn certification into shipped equipment.
