For anyone not familiar with the (we’ll say it) legendary Sennheiser Consumer Audio HD 650, you may want a quick study. Because this ongoing testament to audio excellence has surfaced on our sonar at a rather impressive new price. The HD 650 was released in its current guise in 2010 and at the start of the year was priced at its full $580. Its average Amazon price is $348, but right now it’s down to $284. That’s the lowest the set has been since the end of 2024.

Why we like the Sennheiser Consumer Audio HD 650
Excellent crossover headphones
The HD 650s are a step beyond most regular headphones. Designed purely for users keen to move toward audiophile-focused devices, existing owners love the sound quality – although extra equipment is likely needed to get the best out of them if you don’t already have complementary tech.
Finely engineered
These are open-back headphones, but there’s far more to take notice of here, engineering-wise. For example, the specially designed acoustic silk provides precision damping across the entire frequency range. Plus, Sennheiser has used high-power neodymium magnets for maximum efficiency and optimized magnet systems to minimize harmonic distortion. That should all lead to a super-clean and enjoyable experience for years to come.

Designed for at-home concert enjoyment, the HD 650’s soft open-back earcups and padded headband are meant to be worn for long periods. So you can enjoy the best audio possible without worrying about needing to adjust or move the set.
What to consider before you buy
While the Sennheiser HD 650 is currently priced as a crossover set of audiophile headphones, there are a couple of things to consider. The first is that these aren’t competing with headphones that offer smartphone connectivity, ANC, or Bluetooth features. They are designed to be wired, stationary, and enjoyed at home. Secondly, although you could in theory plug these into a source, to get the most out of them, you will want a DAC and an amp. That adds to the cost, so it is a serious consideration before you buy.
