Legato Emerges From Stealth With $12M to Put AI Hearing Aids Into Glasses Legato emerged from stealth with $12 million in funding to launch Legato Frames, hearing glasses that use AI to separate speech from background noise, with the product expected to launch this fall through select eye-care providers. The startup, founded by Mehul Trivedi and Steve Romine, aims to offer a more affordable and less medical alternative to traditional hearing aids, which average $4,727 per pair without insurance, according to HearingTracker's July 2026 survey. Legato is trying to make hearing aids feel less like medical hardware and more like the glasses you already wear every day. Legato emerged from stealth today with $12 million in funding and a first look at its hearing glasses, called Legato Frames. According to a report from TechCrunch, the startup has built its hearing-assistance technology into the arms of the frames, using AI to lift voices out of background noise instead of making every sound louder at once. The glasses are expected to launch later this fall through select eye-care providers nationwide. That is the bet. You already know the problem with many hearing aids: they can make the barista's espresso machine sound as loud as the person sitting across from you. Legato says its system is trained to separate speech from clutter, so a conversation in a crowded restaurant doesn't become a wall of noise. The founders' backgrounds explain why the company is coming out with some confidence. Mehul Trivedi led the creation of Bose Frames, the audio eyewear line Bose sold before leaving the category, and later worked at EssilorLuxottica on smart eyewear, including Meta Ray-Bans. Steve Romine ran Bose's hearing aids division and was COO at Audicus, a hearing care company. They started Legato in late 2024. The money comes from Neotribe Ventures, Listen, and Village Global, and TechCrunch reported that most of it has gone into product development, with some early marketing. Legato won't say what the frames will cost. But the company told TechCrunch they'll run a "fraction" of what traditional hearing aids cost, and buyers may be able to use vision insurance if they purchase through an eye-care clinic. Cost is the wedge here. HearingTracker's July 2026 survey put the average price of hearing aids bought through a traditional clinic without insurance at $4,727 a pair, while over-the-counter models averaged $502. EssilorLuxottica, the world's largest eyewear company, already sells Nuance Audio Glasses in the US, built around the same idea of hiding hearing assistance inside a normal-looking frame. HearingTracker reported before launch that Nuance would be offered around $1,100, while WIRED's 2025 review listed the glasses at $1,200. Apple has pushed the same market from the other direction. The FDA authorized Apple's Hearing Aid Feature in September 2024 as the first over-the-counter hearing aid software device for compatible AirPods Pro models, after a clinical study of 118 people with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Apple now says the feature works on AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 with the latest firmware, depending on region and device support. Bose still has a route into the market too, through Lexie Hearing's Powered by Bose OTC hearing aids. Glasses versus earbuds So the real fight isn't AI versus no AI. It's glasses versus earbuds, and which form factor people actually want to wear all day. Frankly, that is where Legato's argument gets stronger. Earbuds need charging, they fall out, and plenty of people still read them as a sign that you're half-listening. Glasses don't carry the same signal. Tens of millions of people already put them on every morning without thinking twice. Legato is far from the first hearing startup to chase that insight. It won't be the last. What stands out is how much of this story runs back through Bose. Trivedi and Romine aren't outsiders guessing at a market from a pitch deck. They spent years inside the businesses that tried to make hearing technology smaller, more acceptable, and easier to wear before Bose itself pulled back from selling its own hearing aids. There is still one test left, and it is the only one that matters for buyers. The frames have to work in the places where hearing loss becomes most frustrating: restaurants, family dinners, train platforms, busy offices. A demo can make voice isolation look clean. Real life is messier. If Legato Frames handle that mess when they ship this fall, the company has a real opening. If they don't, the funding, the Bose pedigree, and the vision-insurance angle won't carry the product very far. People don't need hearing tech that sounds good in a launch story. They need to hear the person in front of them.
