These hybrid roles blend product development, testing, and client training, aiming to make AI tools indispensable for legal work.

Hongxi Wang, founding legal engineer at **Equall**, left **Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman** to target tasks she hated most. Miranda Hatch, now at **Norm Ai**, helped build a tool that slashes review of credit agreements in bankruptcy cases from **50 to 100 hours** to just **15 minutes**. “Something that would have taken genuinely 50 to 100 hours as an associate takes 15 minutes,” Hatch said. “That’s a very powerful output.”

The movement is accelerating. **Harvey** employs **160** legal engineers, a fivefold increase in a year, with **51** more openings. **Legora** has about **100** and **43** open roles. These companies prize law firm pedigrees for credibility. “Lawyers love talking to lawyers,” said Tammy Murray, vice president of legal engineering at Harvey.

But the shift raises a thorny question: if AI handles the grind, how do junior lawyers learn the craft? The tedious work associates automate—due diligence, document review, ownership reconciliation—is precisely where they gain foundational knowledge. **Aniket Kesari**, associate professor at **Fordham Law School**, warned, “Without struggling through the basics, it’s harder to do higher level thinking all the time.”

The draw is partly financial—equity stakes offer startup upside—but also philosophical. “In law, there’s that reputation that we’re doing this because it’s the way it’s always been done,” said Jane Elmore, a legal engineer at Legora who left **A&O Shearman** after a decade. “I always found that infuriating.”

Alexis Nicholas moved from London to **San Francisco** to join **Ivo**, an AI contract management startup, calling it “our version of the dot-com boom.” She and others accept the role’s transience. “If it’s fleeting,” Nicholas said, “at least I tried.”

## Training Gap Looms as AI Eats the Grind Work

The risk is not just lost skills but a bifurcated profession. Legal engineers themselves acknowledge the tension. Alex Fortescue-Webb, head of legal engineering at Legora, said, “They influence every aspect of the company,” suggesting that those building the tools may hold disproportionate sway over how law is practiced.

Firms face a dilemma: adopt AI to stay competitive but risk atrophying the apprenticeship model. Some propose simulations or AI-curated case libraries to fill the gap. Yet as legal engineers automate more, the definition of “practice-ready” may shift faster than accreditation can adapt.

## From Billable Hours to Startup Equity

The legal engineer role is evolving rapidly. Companies now hire for specialized practice areas, and the career path is attracting not just lawyers but consultants.
