The crypto exchange becomes the latest digital asset platform to obtain the global standard for responsible AI governance, adding to an already stacked compliance resume.
KuCoin announced on August 20 that its Artificial Intelligence Management System, known as AIMS, has been certified under the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 standard. The certification covers the governance and responsible deployment of AI across the exchange’s operations, from market surveillance to anti-money laundering and fraud detection.
What the certification actually covers #
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the first international standard specifically designed for artificial intelligence management systems. The standard requires organizations to demonstrate transparency in how AI is deployed, establish clear lines of accountability, and commit to continuous improvement. In practical terms for KuCoin, that means its AI-driven tools for spotting suspicious transactions, monitoring market manipulation, and handling customer inquiries have been evaluated against a formal governance framework.
KuCoin CEO BC Wong framed the achievement in terms of trust rather than technological superiority.
“We believe the future of the industry will not be defined simply by more advanced AI, but by more trusted AI.”
Building on an existing compliance stack #
The AI certification doesn’t exist in a vacuum. KuCoin has been assembling what it calls a “Trust Framework” over the past several years. The platform already holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 for information security management, SOC 2 Type II for operational controls, ISO 22301:2019 for business continuity, and ISO/IEC 27701:2019 for privacy information management.
KuCoin serves over 45 million users across more than 200 regions and offers access to over 1,500 digital assets.
The timing is also worth noting. Crypto.com obtained the same ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification back in February 2026, roughly six months earlier, making it the first digital asset platform to receive the recognition. KuCoin’s certification comes second in the sector.
