Korean Gaming Companies Just Held AI-Generated Game Audio Competition Backed by Big Names, Including Microsoft

The first AI Game Sound Design Challenge was held at the GXG 2026 gaming festival in Pangyo, South Korea, in September, organized by game audio company Changjo Workshop with Microsoft and the Korea Mobile Game Association among the sponsors, according to Korean outlet Gamemeca. Twelve Korean game companies supplied silent gameplay footage from 15 games, and contestants used only the Gamesound.ai tool to generate background music, sound effects, and character voices before editing and mixing them. Team OVERTAKE won the Gold Prize, earning about $2,000 in cash plus app credits and a one-year Gamesound.ai Ultra subscription.

Artificial intelligence continues to be a controversial topic among gamers and developers. But that hasn’t stopped gaming companies from finding more ways to push the technology to the front lines. We’ve already seen plenty of AI-generated artwork on ads and storefronts like Steam, so naturally, sound design is next on the menu. A group of gaming companies recently got involved in a competition centered entirely around AI-made audio. Some fairly big names even backed the AI event, including Microsoft.

According to the Korean outlet Gamemeca (via Google Translate), the first AI Game Sound Design Challenge was held as part of the GXG 2026 gaming festival in Pangyo, South Korea, this September. Organized by game audio company Changjo Workshop, it asked participants to add sound effects to completely silent gameplay footage using only the Gamesound.ai tool.

A total of 12 Korean game companies provided footage from 15 different games for the competition. The list included more familiar names such as Com2uS and mobile MMORPG developers like Blue Potion Games. Microsoft and the Korea Mobile Game Association were among the sponsors backing the event.

And yes, what constitutes ‘audio’ seems to encompass basically everything we hear when playing a game. External audio sources and samples were restricted, as contestants had to generate everything from background music and sound effects to character voices using the AI tool alone. They then edited and mixed the purely AI-made results into the footage.

Changjo Workshop CEO and contest advisor Shin So-heon believed the competition showed AI-generation potential for ‘actual’ game sound production. “Game music is a field where musicians of various styles can participate, as it is based on a free worldview and is not biased toward specific genres or trends,” he said, adding that game audio and music have ‘high potential’ to grow into a cultural industry. At the same time, Shin noted that creators still play the crucial role of refining generated sounds and determining the quality of the finished product.

Ten entries eventually made it through the preliminary judging, with the winners decided through a combination of internet votes and professional judges. The one who took home the Gold Prize is Team OVERTAKE, earning around $2,000 in cash alongside app credits and a one-year subscription for Gamesound.ai Ultra.

Still, as the AI-generated content debacle continues, it does make one wonder. For now, humans still have to edit and mix whatever AI tools made. But at this rate, are we running out of parts of game development AI hasn’t touched yet?
