By the time you read this, your feed will be full of the same headline.
“Kimi K3 is here. Open weights. World’s first open 3T model. Number seven in the world.
And it’s FREE.”
All of that is true. I’ve been refreshing the Hugging Face page like everyone else.
But I went and looked at the actual benchmark numbers before writing anything, and they tell a much more interesting story than “free good.”
Two things are true at the same time:
· Kimi K3 is genuinely, seriously smart. Near the frontier.
· “Free” is misleading in two completely different directions.
Let me show you the numbers, because they change what you should actually do on Monday morning.
First, what K3 actually is #

Moonshot AI is a Chinese lab that’s been shipping open models for a while — you might know them from Kimi K2. K3 is their new flagship, and it’s a big deal for one specific reason:
it’s the
