Jeffrey Guenther Rack Cellar

Jeffrey Guenther shared a 12U DeskPi RackMate T2 home rack build on X, replying to Tobi Lutke's rack-cellar thread and describing his setup as "like posting a go-cart to his race car." The rig centers on a Minisforum AI X1 Pro compute node with a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, 96GB of unified memory, 2TB of storage, and dual 2.5G networking, backed by full Ubiquiti network gear including a UCG-Fiber gateway with 10G WAN and 5 Gbps IDS/IPS, a USW-Enterprise-8-PoE core switch, a U7 Pro WiFi 7 access point, and two edge switches. Storage is a TerraMaster F4-424 Pro with four 3.5-inch bays and two M.2 slots, with the 96GB of shared memory noted as enough to load mid-size open models while the XDNA2 NPU handles image and audio workloads.

About this rig #

Jeffrey Guenther replied to Tobi Lutke’s rack-cellar thread with his own build and called it “like posting a go-cart to his race car.” It is a 12U DeskPi RackMate T2, 10 inches deep, on a desk instead of in a wine cellar.

The network stack is full Ubiquiti: a UCG-Fiber gateway pushing 10G WAN with 5 Gbps IDS/IPS, a USW-Enterprise-8-PoE core switch with two 10G SFP+ ports, a U7 Pro WiFi 7 access point, and two edge switches (USW-Lite-8-PoE, USW-Flex-2.5G-5) feeding the desk.

The compute node is a Minisforum AI X1 Pro: Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, 96GB of unified memory, 2TB storage, dual 2.5G. That is 96GB of shared memory in a mini PC - enough to load mid-size open models that would never fit on a gaming laptop, with the XDNA2 NPU handling image and audio workloads on the side.

Storage is a TerraMaster F4-424 Pro with four 3.5-inch bays plus two M.2 slots. Twelve-port patch panels, a 10G DAC between gateway and core, Cat 6A patch, and a rack PDU close it out.
