# Java Annotated Monthly – October 2026

September gave us plenty to talk about, with major releases and thought-provoking reads. Java 27 arrived, and JetBrains opened a new chapter in agentic development with the announcement of JetBrains Air, a system of products for agentic software development, followed by the EAP of JetBrains Air in IDEs. [Marit van Dijk](https://maritvandijk.com/) kicks off this edition with her favorite news of the month and a closer look at these highlights. Then comes our usual selection of news, tutorials, and community stories. Let’s dive in!

## Featured Content

[Java 27](https://openjdk.org/projects/jdk/27/) was released last month. Of course, we support it from day 1 in IntelliJ IDEA. You can read all about it in [Java 27 in IntelliJ IDEA](https://blog.jetbrains.com/idea/2026/09/java-27-in-intellij-idea/) or watch the [release stream](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V2jooUo8O0) if you missed it. [Piotr Przybył](https://softwaregarden.dev/en/) and I updated our talk [Learning modern Java the playful way](https://maritvandijk.com/presentations/modern-java-playful/) and [presented](https://gotocph.com/2026/sessions/4000/learning-modern-java-the-playful-way) it at [GOTO Copenhagen](https://gotocph.com/2026) last week, where I was also on stage for two other sessions. This week, Piotr and I will be doing a [Deep Dive](https://m.devoxx.com/events/dvbe26/talks/9752/learning-modern-java-the-playful-way) version at [Devoxx Belgium](https://devoxx.be/). Later this month you can find us at [JDD](https://jdd.org.pl/) and [Hello Stavanger](https://www.hellostavanger.no/).

In other news, [JetBrains Air](https://www.jetbrains.com/air/) was [announced](https://blog.jetbrains.com/blog/2026/09/22/introducing-jetbrains-air/); one system for building software with agents.
