Japan’s government has unveiled an “AI Robotics Strategy” aiming to position the country as a leading “third pole” in AI robotics, alongside the US and China. The strategy, backed by the Robotics Parliamentarian Caucus and the LDP’s robotics project team, targets the domestic deployment of 10 million AI robots by 2040 and a 20 trillion yen share of the projected 60 trillion yen global market.

This strategy is a direct response to a perceived decade-long stagnation in national robotics policy since 2015, during which Japan believes it has fallen behind the US and China in service robotics and AI robotics. It reflects Japan’s broader industrial policy of identifying strategic sectors for government-led investment to maintain global competitiveness and address domestic challenges like labor shortages.
