Jack Dorsey’s Block launches Buzz groupchat platform to challenge Slack and GitHub

Block, the company led by Jack Dorsey, launched Buzz, an open source group chat and collaboration platform designed to let employees and AI agents work together in the same workspace, aiming to reduce Block's dependence on Slack and GitHub. Buzz combines channels, threads, code repositories, and automated workflows, with AI agents participating as independent members with cryptographic identities, and is built on the Nostr decentralized protocol.

The open source workspace allows employees and AI agents to share channels, workflows, code repositories and cryptographic identities.

Block has launched Buzz, an open source group chat and collaboration platform designed to let employees and AI agents work together inside the same workspace.

Jack Dorsey announced the launch on X, writing, “we’re launching BUZZ! a new groupchat platform for teams of people and agents of all sizes.”

He described the platform as model agnostic, decentralized and self sovereign, adding that it was built to reduce Block’s dependence on Slack and GitHub.

Buzz combines channels, threads, direct messages, voice, media sharing, code repositories and automated workflows. Its interface resembles existing workplace communication platforms, but AI agents participate as independent members rather than bots that only respond to commands.

Each human and agent receives a cryptographic identity with its own permissions and activity history. Agents can post messages, review code, run approved workflows and contribute to projects alongside employees.

The platform is built on Nostr, a decentralized communication protocol where activity is recorded as signed events. Messages, reactions, code changes, workflow actions and approvals can therefore be stored in a shared and searchable audit log.

Buzz supports agents powered by different models and frameworks, including Claude Code, Codex and Block’s Goose. Companies can also connect databases, codebases, file systems and other internal tools while controlling what each agent can access.

Block said teams can use its hosted version or run Buzz on their own infrastructure, giving them control over their data, relay and agents. The software is available under an Apache 2.0 license.

The current release includes channels, threads, direct messages, canvases, media sharing, search, an audit log, desktop applications, automated workflows and early Git integration. Mobile applications, approval gates and additional voice features remain under development.

Block ultimately wants Buzz to combine functions currently spread across workplace chat, code hosting, automated workflows, search tools and continuous integration dashboards.

The company said bringing agents, developers, conversations and code into one workspace could reduce reliance on proprietary platforms while giving teams a single record of how projects were discussed, reviewed and completed.
