The **Trust Identity Protocol (TIP)** is a free, open standard from The AI Lab that lets a verified person sign what they publish, and labels every piece of content as **Original Human, AI-Assisted, AI-Generated or Mixed**. Anyone can then check who made it and how, in one tap, without an account. That one sentence is the whole idea. The rest of this article explains why I think it matters to everyone who uses the internet, not just technologists. ## The Three Questions We All Ask Now Think about the last week of your online life. A voice note from “your bank” asks you to confirm a payment. A photo of a flood goes viral before anyone knows where it was taken. A friend sends you an article, and you wonder whether a person wrote it or a chatbot did. Maybe you post a photo you took, and a week later it shows up on someone else's account with their name on it. Every one of those moments comes down to the same three questions: 1. **Is this real?** 2. **Who made this?** 3. **Will my work be stolen?** For most of the internet's history we answered them with instinct. We looked at the logo, the account name, the writing style. Generative AI has broken that instinct. A cloned voice sounds right. A synthetic photo looks right. A convincing article reads right. I work in product management and business transformation in financial services, and the fraud side of this is not theoretical: Deloitte projects that losses from generative-AI-enabled fraud in the United States could reach **$40 billion by 2027**, up from $12.3 billion in 2023. We do not need better guessing. We need a way to know. ## Before TIP and After TIP The picture at the top of this article is how I explain TIP to friends and family. On the left is the internet as it works today: three questions and no reliable way to answer them. The difference is that the answer is attached to the content itself. ## What Is the Trust Identity Protocol, in Plain English? TIP does two simple things. **It verifies the person.** A creator gets a **TIP-ID**, a digital identity issued after a real person is verified by an accredited Verification Provider. Your raw biometric data is never stored. One person, one TIP-ID, usable across every platform. **It labels and signs the content.** When that person publishes a photo, video, article, song or post, TIP gives it a **Content Trust ID (CTID)**: a permanent record of who made it, when, and how it was made. The creator declares one of four labels: - **Original Human:** made entirely by a person, with no AI generation. - **AI-Assisted:** the person is the main author, and AI helped edit, suggest or enhance. - **AI-Generated:** AI did the main generation, and the person prompted, selected or curated. - **Mixed:** human and AI work combined from more than one source. That is it. Honest labels, tied to a verified person, recorded where anyone can check them. ## How It Works in Three Steps 1. **Get verified once.** A creator obtains a free TIP-ID from a Verification Provider. It takes a few minutes. 2. **Sign as you publish.** Content is signed through the TIP browser extension (available for Chrome, Firefox and Safari), the[WordPress plugin](/wordpress) , or the API. Each piece gets its CTID and label. 3. **Anyone can verify.** A reader taps the TIP badge, or opens the CTID link that travels with the content, and sees who made it, the label, and whether anything has changed since. The link works on any platform, with or without the extension. No account, no cost. ## Why TIP Matters to You **If you read, watch or share things online,** you get a clear answer to “is this real?” before you believe it, forward it, or act on it. That matters most for the people in our lives who are most likely to be targeted: older parents, teenagers, anyone who is busy and trusting. **If you create things,** whether you are a photographer, musician, writer, designer or creator, you get proof that your work is yours. When a copy turns up somewhere with your name stripped off, you do not have to argue. You point to a dated, signed record that existed before the copy did, and anyone can check it in seconds. There is more on this in our guide to [protecting your art, music and video from AI](/protect-art-from-ai). **If you run a small business,** you can show customers that your content, reviews and announcements genuinely came from you, and label anything AI-assisted honestly instead of hoping nobody asks. **If you are a journalist or publisher,** your byline becomes something a reader can verify, not just trust. ## What Makes TIP Trustworthy A system that tells you what to trust has to be trustworthy itself. This is the part I find most convincing. - **Free:** signing is free for individuals, and verifying content is free for everyone, forever, with no account. - **Decentralized:** the public record is kept by independent node operators in multiple countries. No single platform, company or country controls it, and TIP is governed by the independent[AI Trust Council™](/ai-trust-council) . - **Immutable:** records are append-only. A record cannot be quietly edited or erased. Corrections are added as new signed entries, so the history stays visible. - **Quantum-safe:** signatures use ML-DSA-65 (NIST FIPS 204), a post-quantum standard designed to hold up against future quantum computers. - **Open:** the specification is published under CC BY 4.0, so anyone can read it, build on it, or run a node. The reference implementation converts irrevocably to the Apache License 2.0 on 1 January 2031. ## The Rules Are Catching Up Governments and standards bodies around the world are now asking for exactly what TIP provides: clear labels on AI-generated content and records that can be checked. - **[EU AI Act, Article 50](/eu-ai-act):** from 2 August 2026, AI-generated content must be marked in a machine-readable way, and deepfakes must be disclosed. - **NIST AI Risk Management Framework and its Generative AI Profile (NIST AI 600-1):** treat information integrity and content provenance as core risks to manage. - **ISO/IEC 42001:** the international standard for AI management systems includes controls on data provenance and on informing users. - **Australia's AI Ethics Principles and Voluntary AI Safety Standard:** call for transparency, contestability and accountability, including telling people when content is AI-generated. - **Singapore's Model AI Governance Framework for Generative AI:** names content provenance as one of its core dimensions. TIP does not replace any of these, and it does not certify anyone. It gives people and organisations the evidence these frameworks ask for, in a form anyone can verify. TIP does not stop someone from copying your work, and it does not stop an AI model from training on it. What it does is prove who made something and how, even after it has been copied. It is evidence, not a lock. And a label is a declaration by the creator.
