Is the 3x AI Productivity Gain just a Computer that Never Sleeps?

OpenAI's research staff logged 3.14 agent-workdays for every 8-hour human shift in mid-August, with the median researcher's daily inference cost surging from $14 in late March to over $600 by mid-August—a 40-fold increase—and the 90th percentile burning through more than $7,000 a day, an annualized $2.5 million per seat. OpenAI reports that more than half of successful four-to-eight-hour tasks still required human intervention, and the lab cautions that 'the overall pace of progress likely won’t keep pace with these specific metrics.' The 3x productivity gain reflects machines running 24/7 under human supervision, not three times smarter thinking, and the cost is pure operating expense with a high defect rate.
