Is Claude Down? Anthropic Working on Fix for Latest Major Outage

Anthropic is working to fully restore Claude after an outage that began around 10 a.m. ET on Sept. 29 and left tens of thousands of users unable to access Claude AI, Claude Code, and Cowork, while Console and API tools showed "Degraded Performance." Anthropic acknowledged the issues 20 minutes after Downdetector reports spiked and applied a mitigation at 10:40 a.m. ET that dropped error rates "substantially," but the company said sign-in attempts, account actions, and Claude Code and Cowork sessions were still failing and gave no timeline for a full fix. ChatGPT and Google Gemini saw only small spikes in Downdetector reports in the hundreds of users, and Anthropic's Claude for Government was unaffected.

Struggling to access Claude AI? You're not the only one: another outage is preventing tens of thousands of users from using Anthropic's tools. Anthropic is working on a fix and says it applied a "mitigation" at 10:40 a.m. ET, which saw error rates drop "substantially." However, the brand acknowledged that it wouldn't be enough to fully fix its services, meaning you may be locked out for longer. The Claude status website reads, "Some sign-in attempts, account actions, and Claude Code and Cowork sessions are still failing. We are continuing to work on a full fix." Anthropic has yet to provide a timeline for when more news will be available. Other rival services, ChatGPT and Google Gemini, saw a small spike in outage reports on Downdetector, but they're in the 100s of users rather than the tens of thousands.
