UPDATE 11:28 a.m. ET: Anthropic confirms its AI tools are returning to normal after an hour-long outage affecting its chatbot, Code, Cowork, and more.

Struggling to access Claude AI? You're not the only one: another outage is preventing tens of thousands of users from using Anthropic's tools.
The outage began around 10 a.m. ET on Sept. 29, when Downdetector reports began to spike. Anthropic acknowledged the issues 20 minutes later, saying that almost all of its tools were experiencing issues, except Claude for Government.
Claude AI, Code, and Cowork are all experiencing partial outages, while Console and API tools are showing what Anthropic calls "Degraded Performance."
Anthropic is working on a fix and says it applied a "mitigation" at 10:36 a.m. ET, which saw error rates drop "substantially." However, the brand acknowledged that it wouldn't be enough to fully fix its services, meaning you may be locked out for longer.
In its most recent update, Claude's status website said, "Existing conversations are mostly working again." However, there's a second issue that prevents users from logging in via single sign-on or an Apple account. Anthropic recommends that you avoid logging out to maintain access.
It also says that starting new text or voice conversations, making purchases, up files, and Claude Code or Cowork sessions are still experiencing issues. Anthropic says it's working on a fix for these problems and will provide a further update by 11:30 a.m. ET.
Meanwhile, Spotify also saw a spike in outage reports today, about half an hour earlier than Claude, according to Downdetector. The streamer said it was aware of issues at 10:23 a.m. ET, and has yet to provide a further update. At PCMag, we found that the app had trouble songs from an album, but started working a few minutes later.
Other rival AI services, ChatGPT and Google Gemini, saw a small spike in outage reports on Downdetector, but the numbers were in the 100s rather than the tens of thousands. At PCMag, we encountered trouble with Claude, but not on ChatGPT or Gemini.
Early in September, a major outage caused various AI providers to struggle to keep their services live, including Anthropic's Claude tools.
