# Is Bernie's AI sovereign wealth fund proposal good or bad for AI safety?

In the [New York Times yesterday](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/01/opinion/artificial-intelligence-bernie-sanders.html), U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders argued that the U.S. Government should own a 50% share of the major AI companies, held within a sovereign wealth fund.

The main goal of this proposal is to avoid AI resulting in a "permanent underclass" (at least among U.S. citizens). However, Bernie's essay doesn't really address the implications for AI safety. So, what do you think?
