Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan hints at strategic shift back to memory

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan hinted at a potential return to the memory chip business, 41 years after the company exited DRAM, citing AI-driven demand that is expected to keep memory supply sold out through 2027 or 2028. Tan mentioned new memory architectures as a 'pet project' and highlighted CPU-memory stacking as an area of interest, while Intel has hired former SK Hynix CEO Seok-Hee Lee as executive vice president of its foundry division. No formal re-entry was announced.

Four decades after abandoning DRAM, Intel is eyeing a return to memory chips as AI demand creates multi-year shortages

Intel got out of the memory business in 1985. Forty-one years later, its new CEO is quietly suggesting the company might get back in.

During a recent TechSurge podcast appearance, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan described new memory architectures as a “pet project” and flagged the sector as a strategic opportunity in an AI-dominated semiconductor landscape. He stopped short of announcing a formal re-entry, but the breadcrumbs he’s leaving are hard to ignore.

From commodity to kingmaker #

The explosion of demand from AI data centers has turned memory into one of the tightest bottlenecks in the entire compute stack. Current projections suggest memory supply will be effectively sold out for at least the next two years, stretching into 2027 or 2028.

Tan acknowledged this transformation directly, noting that memory has evolved from being viewed as a pure commodity into something far more valuable.

One of the clearest signals of Intel’s seriousness is a personnel move. The company recently hired Seok-Hee Lee, the former CEO of SK Hynix, as executive vice president of its foundry division. SK Hynix is one of the world’s top memory manufacturers and a dominant supplier of the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips that power Nvidia’s AI accelerators.

Tan specifically pointed to CPU-memory stacking technologies as an area of interest. This approach, which physically layers memory chips on top of or directly adjacent to processors, can dramatically reduce the latency and energy costs of moving data between compute and storage.

A complicated history #

Intel’s relationship with memory is a case study in strategic retreat. The company was actually founded as a memory company in 1968. Its early products were DRAM and SRAM chips, and for years memory was its bread and butter.

Then came the 1980s. Aggressive pricing from Japanese manufacturers made DRAM production increasingly unprofitable for Intel. In 1985, then-CEO Andy Grove made what became one of the most celebrated strategic pivots in business history, pulling Intel out of DRAM entirely to focus on microprocessors.

But Intel didn’t stay away from memory forever. It later developed Optane, a novel memory technology based on 3D XPoint architecture that promised to bridge the performance gap between DRAM and storage. Optane never achieved the scale Intel hoped for, and the company eventually wound down the product line. Intel also exited the NAND flash market, selling its memory and storage business to SK Hynix.
