These apps will queue up content that catches your eye as you go to and fro across the web, and keep these articles, videos, blog posts, and social media updates bookmarked until you get a chance to catch up with them. When it’s time to dig in, the apps present the articles in a clean, uncluttered layout.\n\nIt's a neat idea, but it needs to be well implemented for it to work—otherwise you can spend more time compiling and organizing your reading than actually catching up on your queue.\n\n[Instapaper](https://www.instapaper.com/) is one of the oldest read-it-later apps, having launched back in 2008. It's also still one of the best options, even more so now that it's been given [a major revamp](https://blog.instapaper.com/2026/07/28/instapaper-10/). Here's what's new, and why it might be worth your while diving back into your Instapaper account (or signing up for the first time).\n\n## Instapaper Basics\n\nInstapaper is available for [the web](https://www.instapaper.com/), [Android](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.instapaper.android), and [iOS](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/instapaper/id288545208), and reflows web articles into a tidily arranged, distraction-free format that doesn't feature any ads, menus, or other onscreen furniture. You just get the text and the images, so reading the articles you've saved is a more pleasurable experience than it is on the web.\n\nYou can customize the Instapaper interface in a variety of ways. The apps let you change the font style, size, and spacing, and adjust the background color of the “paper” that the text and images are placed on.\n\nEverything is neatly arranged on the screen, too. You get estimates for how long each article will take to read (as well as the option to see summaries of the text). You can use folders and tags to categorize saved posts in a variety of ways. Also, everything syncs seamlessly across all the devices you're using Instapaper on.\n\nGetting articles into Instapaper—a crucial part of the process—is straightforward. On mobile you can pass web links into the app through the standard share tools, while on desktop you can either paste the URLs straight into Instapaper, or use the extensions that are available for the most popular browsers.\n\nYou can add and store an unlimited number of articles in Instapaper for free. There's also a premium package available for $6 a month or $60 a year, which removes the ads from the apps, and gives you extras like a search tool, Kindle support, and the option to have your saved articles read out to you.\n\n## Instapaper's Big 2026 Update\n\nI've been using Instapaper very happily for years, but not so much recently. That's nothing to do with Instapaper, really. It's more about an increase in work and family commitments, and having less time than I'd like just to read. It also means that my read-it-later list has grown to a scary length.\n\nNow the service has got [its biggest update](https://blog.instapaper.com/2026/07/28/instapaper-10/) in quite some time, which means I've got a good excuse to log back in and start chipping away at all the articles I've been meaning to read. The web app revamp is actually only the second full rewrite of the Instapaper code since the service launched, and it brings with it an elegant three-column layout that keeps everything in view and works really well on wide displays (like mine).\n\nOther improvements include keyboard shortcuts (which I noticed are shown on screen next to menus when you start clicking around), and a new multi-select feature. You can now select all of the articles in a specific list, as well as using **Shift+Click** to select a range of articles in the queue.\n\nOver on iOS, the app has been given a full Liquid Glass refresh, and there are several improvements that cover section counts, section sorting, and a wider choice of appearance options (including new fonts). The existing AI Voices feature, which reads out articles in the synthetic AI voice of your choosing, has now made its way to Android, too.\n\nIf you're a premium Instapaper user, you can have articles read out by tapping the three dots up in the top right corner when a saved item is open.
