Instant's team joins OpenAI as its cloud service heads for shutdown

OpenAI is adding four engineers from Instant, the real-time database developer tool, whose hosted cloud service will shut down on August 31st, 2027, with backups preserved for another year. Co-founders Joe Averbukh and Stepan Parunashvili announced on August 22nd that Instant's team is joining OpenAI, ending the four-year run of the hosted business. Instant reported more than 17,000 users created 400,000 apps processing roughly 2.5 billion transactions, and new registrations are closed, with existing subscriptions given 12 months to migrate.

Why it matters #

OpenAI is adding four engineers who spent years making databases usable by front-end developers and coding agents. Instant customers now have 12 months to migrate from the hosted service or assume the operational cost of running it themselves.

Joe Averbukh (@JoeAverbukh) and Stepan Parunashvili (@stopachka) said on August 22nd that Instant's team is joining OpenAI, ending the four-year run of their real-time database developer tool as a hosted cloud business.

The move sends Averbukh, Parunashvili, Daniel Woelfel and Drew Harris to OpenAI. Instant framed the deal as a team move and did not attach a purchase price or other financial terms. The immediate consequence for customers is concrete: new Instant Cloud registrations are closed, existing subscriptions must migrate, and hosted apps will shut down on August 31st, 2027.

Averbukh and Parunashvili met in San Francisco in 2014 and later worked as senior and staff engineers at Facebook and Airbnb. Parunashvili had previously joined natural-language interface startup Wit.ai, which Facebook acquired. The pair spent several years building products together before taking Instant through Y Combinator's Summer 2022 batch.

Their founding thesis was that much of the repetitive work in modern application development - APIs, client-side state management, optimistic updates, offline support and live synchronization - belonged inside the database. Instant exposed a real-time database directly to front-end applications, using a graph-shaped data model and a permissions layer intended to give developers Firebase's speed with support for relational data.

That work produced a Clojure sync server, a client-side triple store and a query system that executes locally for fast interface updates while using Postgres as the server-side source of truth. Instant later expanded into authentication, file storage, permissions and other backend services. The open-source repository had about 10,400 GitHub stars when the OpenAI move was announced.

Agents became Instant's main route to users

The founders tied the decision directly to AI coding agents. In an announcement on Instant's site, Instant said most users had begun reaching the product through agents rather than adopting it through a conventional developer workflow.

That shift changed where the team's work could have the largest effect. Instant had spent years removing backend setup from app development. Coding agents create the same demand at a larger scale: generated applications still need databases, authentication, permissions, storage and synchronization, even when a model writes most of the code.

Instant says more than 17,000 users created 400,000 apps on its platform, processing roughly 2.5 billion transactions. Those are company-reported lifetime figures, and Instant did not break out how many apps were active, how much revenue Instant Cloud generated or what share of usage came from paying customers.

OpenAI is gaining a small group with direct experience building infrastructure for agent-generated software. Instant is closing the hosted product that gave the group its customer base, leaving OpenAI with the engineers and technical knowledge while customers take responsibility for moving their applications.

Customers have one year to leave Instant Cloud

Instant Cloud subscriptions started after July 31st, 2026 will be refunded, according to the announcement. Existing apps will remain supported until the August 31st, 2027 shutdown. Backups will remain accessible until August 31st, 2028.

Instant has published self-hosting and migration documentation, and the code remains available under an Apache 2.0 license. The guides estimate that a small deployment can start at roughly $30 a month on a virtual private server. Instant's AWS-based configuration for production businesses is expected to cost at least $600 a month before engineering and operational work.

The migration window gives developers time, though self-hosting transfers database operations, monitoring, email delivery and scaling work back to the customer. That is precisely the work Instant Cloud had packaged as a service.

Instant raised a $3.4 million seed round in 2024 from Y Combinator, SV Angel and technical angels including former Firebase CEO James Tamplin, Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham, OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman and Google DeepMind chief scientist Jeff Dean. Instant had open-sourced its core system shortly before the round.

Less than two years later, the hosted service is on a shutdown clock and the team is moving inside the AI lab whose agents helped reshape how developers encountered Instant in the first place.
