As generative image and video models make it increasingly difficult to distinguish virtual influencers from real human beings, Instagram is stepping up its platform transparency rules. The social media giant announced an updated policy targeting accounts that present entirely AI-generated personas. Replacing its earlier "AI creator" tag with a more explicit "AI-generated profile" label, Instagram warned that any account featuring an AI-generated person without adding the required disclosure will have its algorithmic distribution restricted across the platform. Instagram has already implemented the “AI Content” tag under posts in feeds. This new label will go hand in hand with the previous iteration, where AI-generated content, AI creators, and accounts with just AI Personas will be recognisable to everyone more easily.
Transparent disclosure and algorithm penalties
The updated policy specifically targets virtual personas that depict artificial humans living digital lifestyles, posting fitness routines, or offering advice while masquerading as real individuals. Instagram stated that users expressed strong frustration after following accounts they believed were human, only to discover later that the personas were completely synthetic.

Under the new framework, accounts featuring an AI-generated person must toggle on the AI-generated profile setting in their account settings. The badge will be visibly pinned beneath the profile display name and overlaid on posts, Reels, and Stories.
Accounts that proactively apply the label will retain their normal platform reach without algorithmic penalties. However, those that refuse or fail to disclose their synthetic nature will be classified as "non-recommendable," effectively blocking their posts from surfacing on the Explore tab, recommended Reels feeds, and suggested user feeds for non-followers.
Distinguishing synthetic humans from human creators using AI
Instagram clarified that the mandatory profile badge applies strictly to the identity of the persona rather than the general use of generative tools. Real human creators who use artificial intelligence for photo editing, caption drafting, video upscaling, or digital art creation do not need to apply the profile-level tag.
For existing accounts that were already using the older "AI creator" tag, Instagram is automatically migrating them to the new "AI-generated profile" designation, allowing creators to review, confirm, or remove the status if their account transitions to a human-led format. The era of faceless AI persona farms printing millions of free organic impressions is officially coming to an end.

Drawing a firm and strict algorithmic line between authentic human creators and synthetic digital puppets is a crucial step for platform integrity. Monetizing parasocial relationships with lifelike AI avatars without disclosure was quickly eroding user trust, and stripping recommendation reach from deceptive accounts hits bad actors where it actually hurts: their follower growth. As hyper-realistic generative video accelerates, transparent provenance isn't just a community guideline--it is vital to preserving the human soul of social media.
