# IFA 2026: Philips Hue adds AI, cheaper TV sync and Nanoleaf support

Philips Hue announced a set of hardware and software updates at **IFA 2026** in Berlin, including natural-language lighting automations, a cheaper TV-sync box, a camera-based system for native TV apps and a new way to bring selected Nanoleaf panels into Hue scenes.

The launch expands Hue beyond its traditional smart-bulb lineup. New decorative, outdoor and Festavia lights are joining the range, while owners of existing Hue systems will get cloud backup, Sonos controls and more flexible TV installation options.

## Cheaper TV syncing, with a camera option for built-in apps

The **Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box 4K** is aimed at buyers who don’t need the 8K capability of Hue’s flagship sync box. It costs **$149.99** in the US, or £134.99 in the UK, and has a single HDMI input. The box is limited to 4K, but it can synchronize Hue lighting with video without requiring a camera.

That single-input design limits systems with several HDMI sources. The box is also not the only new route to screen-based lighting: Hue is introducing **Play Screen Sync**, a **$119.99** camera-based system priced at £109.99.

Screen Sync uses a fisheye lens and automatic calibration to watch the display, analyze its colors in real time and translate them into lighting changes. Because it observes the screen rather than an HDMI signal, it can work with native smart-TV apps, broadcast television and devices connected through HDMI. A user watching Netflix through a TV’s built-in app, for example, would not need to route that video through an external streaming device or sync box.

That approach resembles camera-based products already offered by companies including Govee. Philips Hue’s system can connect directly to Hue hardware and does not depend on extracting a video signal from a source device. The camera must be positioned to view the display, and the system analyzes the screen after it is displayed rather than receiving the underlying video signal.

Hue says there is also an existing app-based option for Samsung and LG televisions that avoids a camera, but the new hardware is intended to address the limitations of that approach. The company hasn’t provided independent latency or color-accuracy measurements for Screen Sync in the supplied material, so its practical performance relative to other camera-based systems is still unverified.

A single **Hue Play gradient strip light** can connect over Bluetooth directly to either Play Screen Sync or the HDMI Sync Box 4K. That allows basic TV synchronization without a Hue Bridge. Adding a standard Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro expands the setup to as many as **10 lights** for a surround-lighting arrangement.

## AI automations arrive first on Bridge Pro

Hue’s **Custom AI Behaviors** are designed to replace manual construction of automations. Instead of separately selecting triggers, conditions and actions in the Hue app, owners will be able to describe the desired behavior in ordinary language and have Hue’s AI assistant create it.

The examples given include changing how switches and motion sensors behave on weekends, triggering a scene when it gets dark rather than at a fixed time, and activating a lighting configuration when TV synchronization begins. This is not a general feature for every Hue installation: Custom AI Behaviors are scheduled for **early October** and require the **Philips Hue Bridge Pro**.

That hardware restriction makes the feature less of an ecosystem-wide software update than the word “AI” might suggest. Existing users with the standard Hue Bridge won’t receive the new behavior builder based on the information available here, and Philips Hue hasn’t detailed what data is processed locally or in the cloud.

Hue is also adding **Back-up & Restore**. The service will save lights, accessories, rooms, zones, scenes and automations to the cloud and will support both the standard Hue Bridge and Bridge Pro for backups. Initially, however, restoring a saved setup will be limited to Bridge Pro. Hue hasn’t announced a release date for the backup feature.

A separate integration scheduled for **November** will let selected Hue switches control Sonos speakers. The Hue Tap Dial Switch is among the supported devices. Buttons can be assigned to Sonos Favorites, playback can be started or paused, volume can be changed, and tracks can be skipped forward or backward.

## Nanoleaf panels can join Hue scenes

Philips Hue and Nanoleaf are making selected Nanoleaf Shapes compatible with the Hue ecosystem. The supported Shapes range includes **Hexagons, Triangles and Mini Triangles**.

The connection is a new **Philips Hue Wall Light Module**, priced at **$39.99** or £34.99. It can replace an existing Nanoleaf module or be purchased in a bundle with panels. Once connected, the Nanoleaf lights can be included in Hue scenes, automations and entertainment setups.

The module provides interoperability at the control layer; the announcement does not say that Hue and Nanoleaf hardware will become electrically interchangeable or that every Nanoleaf product will be supported. The compatibility announcement is limited to the named Shapes products and the new module.

Hue users gain another class of wall-mounted lighting without abandoning the Hue app and automation system, while Nanoleaf gains access to Hue’s scene and entertainment controls. ## More cuttable strips and larger TV support
