He is accused of ramming an ICE vehicle and trying to run over an officer before the shooting at about 6.50am local time. The officer is said to have used his weapon in self-defence. The man has since been identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national. He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, according to officials. The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that ICE law enforcement ‘attempted to conduct a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation to arrest an illegal alien.’ Mr Salgado Araujo’s son, Ronaldo Salgado, said his dad has been in the US for over three decades and worked in construction ‘to provide for myself, two brothers, and my mother,’ The Washington Post reports. He said: ‘My father did not deserve this.’ Homeland Security said: ‘The driver of the vehicle, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo—an illegal alien from Mexico—attempted to evade arrest. ‘From information we are receiving, he rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponised his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defence.’ ‘The driver was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted. The driver was transported to the hospital where he passed away from his injuries.’ An investigation into the shooting has been launched, led by Homeland Security.
