IBM has spent decades powering some of the world’s most demanding enterprise workloads. With its first dual-architecture processor, announced this week at Hot Chips, enterprises will have access to the Arm compute platform across the cloud, on-premises on standard servers and within high-reliability IBM mainframe environments – all while tapping into the same software ecosystem.
The processor, designed for future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems, marks the first tangible milestone from IBM’s strategic collaboration with Arm established earlier this year. It will allow Arm-native Linux environments to run alongside z/OS and existing Linux applications, bringing Arm software directly into these enterprise systems while giving Arm workloads the benefit of IBM’s enterprise-grade security and resilience.
As more cloud and AI software is created and optimized for Arm, the new processor gives enterprises another way to benefit from those capabilities – expanding access to modern software without requiring customers to move critical workloads elsewhere.
A new model for enterprise computing #
IBM’s approach introduces a new dimension to heterogeneous computing. Rather than treating Arm as a separate subsystem, each processor core is designed to natively execute both IBM and Arm instructions, allowing Arm and IBM software environments to coexist within the same enterprise system.
That matters particularly for IBM Z and LinuxONE customers in industries such as financial services, where security, availability and operational continuity are essential. The result expands what IBM’s enterprise systems can support without asking customers to sacrifice the capabilities they already depend on.
