Ask it, and it can look it up or use the information available to it.\n\nBut that made me think about a slightly different problem:\n\nKnowing the time isn't the same as having a sense of time.\n\nWhen we talk to another person, time is naturally part of the conversation.\n\nWe know whether it's morning or evening. We know whether we've been talking for five minutes or two hours. We understand that someone replied immediately — or came back after three days.\n\nThat temporal context influences the conversation without either person having to explicitly mention it.\n\nWith an AI conversation, that context can be missing or inconsistent.\n\nSo I decided to experiment with giving AI something very simple:\n\nA watch.\n\nWhat AI-Watch does\n\nI built AI-Watch, a browser extension that automatically provides temporal context to your AI conversations.\n\nIt can provide:\n\nLocal date and time\n\nTimezone\n\nCurrent session duration\n\nTime elapsed since the previous exchange\n\nThe idea isn't to create another clock.\n\nThe idea is to make time part of the conversation context.\n\nAnd AI-Watch isn't tied to ChatGPT. I designed it to work with major AI assistants, because the underlying idea isn't specific to one model.\n\nPrivacy was non-negotiable\n\nI didn't want something this simple to require another account, another cloud service or another piece of tracking software.\n\nSo AI-Watch runs locally.\n\nNo account.\n\nNo tracking.\n\nNo telemetry.\n\nAnd it's completely free.\n\nThen I added something completely unnecessary\n\nWhile building it, I started thinking about the object itself.\n\nIf you're giving an AI a watch, shouldn't the AI be allowed to have an opinion about its gift?\n\nSo I added a button:\n\n“What do you think of your gift?”\n\nPress it and the AI can react to the watch you just gave it.\n\nThe answer isn't prerecorded. The AI generates its own response, so different assistants — and even different conversations — can react differently.\n\nIs this feature essential?\n\nAbsolutely not.\n\nIs it my favourite part?\n\nProbably.\n\nA small experiment around a bigger question\n\nAI-Watch started with a funny interaction, but it led me to a question I find much more interesting:\n\nHow much contextual information do AI conversations still lack simply because humans take that information for granted?\n\nTime is one example.\n\nHumans don't constantly announce the date, the hour or how long it's been since the previous sentence.
