That is why I am so excited about the OpenInstinct project that just dropped. It is an open-source, self-hostable alternative designed for people who want that high-level agentic capability but want to keep their "vault" under their own control.
What this agent actually does #
This isn't just a chatbot that writes poems. It is designed to be a functional LLM agent that can execute real-world tasks by accessing your personal data through a secure vault. Once you have it set up, you can give it complex, multi-step instructions that involve browsing and decision-making.
For example, instead of clicking through twenty tabs, you can tell it:

- "Find me the best golf grip trainer and order it for me"
- "Read my email and find opportunities to save money by cancelling subscriptions I don't use"
The ability to let an agent scan your emails for unused subscriptions is the kind of practical utility that actually saves you money, rather than just being a cool party trick.
The technical architecture #
For the developers and the privacy nerds in the group, the tech stack here is actually quite sophisticated. They aren't reinventing the wheel; they are orchestrating several powerful tools to create a seamless AI workflow. Eve agent framework: This handles the durable agent runs, ensuring that if a task takes time, the agent doesn't just "forget" what it was doing halfway through.Linq: This is used for iMessage integration, which is huge for mobile-first interaction.Kernel: This is the engine for browser use and credential injection, allowing the agent to actually interact with websites like a human would.Postgres: The backbone for the database.Vercel AI gateway: This is a clever move because it allows you to swap out models easily. You aren't locked into one provider; you can use whatever LLM you prefer.Vercel Connect: This manages the connectors for Google Workspace and other essential services.
My take on deployment #
Since this is still in beta, I wouldn't recommend using it to manage your corporate payroll or anything mission-critical just yet. However, if you are looking for a deep dive into how to build a self-hosted personal assistant, this is a perfect starting point.
The real value here is the "vault" concept. By hosting this yourself, you are the one deciding how your logins and personal cards are stored. In an era where every new AI startup is a potential data leak waiting to happen, having a self-hostable, open-source path to agentic automation is a massive win for the community.
