ChatGPT vs Duolingo: A Spanish-learning comparison highlights two very different approaches to learning a language #
Austin Armstrong, CEO and co-founder of Syllaby, has drawn attention to AI-assisted language learning with a social media post saying that ChatGPT taught him more Spanish in seven days than Duolingo did in two years.
In the post, Armstrong describes using ChatGPT for personalised Spanish practice, including conversation, corrections, and everyday phrases. However, the comparison reflects Armstrong's personal experience and does not claim that ChatGPT is more effective than Duolingo for language learning.
The Six Prompts Behind the Spanish Learning Challenge #
The post outlined six prompts designed to turn ChatGPT into a personalised Spanish tutor. The exercises covered conversational practice, translation, corrections, everyday phrases, and a daily study routine.
The first prompt asked ChatGPT to act as a Spanish tutor and teach the user to hold a two-minute conversation about daily life, step by step. The second prompt combined translation with testing, asking ChatGPT to translate a sentence into Spanish, and quizzing the learner in three different ways and explaining any mistakes.
A third prompt simulated a coffee-shop conversation in Mexico, with ChatGPT instructed to use casual slang and encourage responses in Spanish. The fourth prompt focused on correcting written Spanish and explaining the errors.
The final two prompts asked ChatGPT for 10 modern phrases commonly used in Latin America and a 15-minute daily routine combining listening, speaking, and writing.
Can ChatGPT Actually Help You Learn? #
Recent research suggests AI chatbots can support second-language learning, particularly in areas such as speaking and writing. A 2025 systematic review of 30 empirical studies published between 2020 and 2024 found improvements across several language skills, with particularly notable gains reported in speaking and writing. The researchers pointed to real-time feedback, increased opportunities to practise, and reduced anxiety as possible factors contributing to the reported gains.
A separate meta-analysis of 31 studies covering 41 effect sizes found a medium positive effect of chatbots on second-language learning. However, the results varied according to factors including chatbot modality, accessibility, whether generative AI was involved, and the type of comparison group used.
Research has also highlighted the need for more evidence on ChatGPT specifically. ZhaoHong Han, a professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, has called for more systematic research into ChatGPT's role in second-language acquisition. Her 2024 editorial called for systematic research into how learners use ChatGPT and whether interactions with the technology lead to measurable changes in language development.
ChatGPT vs Duolingo: Two Different Approaches #
Comparing Duolingo with ChatGPT highlights two very different approaches to language learning.
ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI assistant that learners can adapt into a personalised tutor for conversation, writing practice, corrections, and translation. That flexibility allows learners to create exercises around specific situations and practise at their own pace.
Duolingo, meanwhile, is built specifically for language education, offering structured lessons, repetition, and progress tracking. Duolingo also provides a defined learning path that guides users through lessons and skills over time.
The app's effectiveness has also been examined in research. A 2021 Duolingo research report found that 66% of Spanish learners who completed the beginning-level content achieved an overall speaking score of A2 or higher.
Additionally, a study published in Foreign Language Annals found that learners who completed Duolingo's beginning-level Spanish or French courses achieved reading and listening results comparable to students who had completed four university semesters of language study.
The available research therefore supports the usefulness of both approaches, but it does not establish that ChatGPT can produce in seven days what Duolingo produces in two years.
