The AI platform's newest hardware entry signals a deepening push to put programmable robots in everyday hands
Hugging Face, best known as the GitHub of AI models, wants to be the place where you also buy your next robot. The company unveiled Microduck on August 27, 2026, a $399 waddling robot that continues its surprisingly rapid expansion into consumer and educational hardware.
From model hub to robot shelf #
Hugging Face’s hardware ambitions did not appear overnight. The company acquired Pollen Robotics in April 2025, picking up an established team with experience in expressive humanoid design.
The first product out of that foundation was the Reachy Mini, a compact 11-inch desktop robot launched in July 2025 at a starting price of $299. It shipped with more than 15 pre-built demo behaviors and full Python programmability, targeting developers, educators, and hobbyists who want to experiment with physical AI without a research budget.
By May 2026, Hugging Face had sold roughly 10,000 Reachy Mini units and launched a dedicated app store carrying over 200 apps.
The open-source duck that came first #
Open Duck Mini, a 3D-printable bipedal robot with a bill of materials under $400, became a quiet sensation in open robotics circles. It uses reinforcement learning to navigate its waddling gait, and it earned a public spotlight at Google I/O 2026.
Hugging Face’s decision to price Microduck at $399 places it in direct conversation with that community-built alternative. Developers can pull a new locomotion model, swap in a vision fine-tune, or experiment with behavioral policies the same way they would update a software dependency.
What this means for the accessible robotics market #
Hugging Face has the model hub, the developer community, the app store, and now at least two consumer hardware products at price points that a classroom or a curious engineer can justify without a purchase order process.
