The Commerce Secretary is turning a Chapel Hill hotel into the world's most consequential AI policy conversation next week
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will sit down for fireside chats with two of the most powerful people in artificial intelligence, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, at the US-hosted G20 Innovation Ministerial on September 1-2 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The summit, co-hosted by the Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy under Michael Kratsios, is designed to gather G20 ministers around a single agenda: how the world’s largest economies should approach AI development, regulation, and cooperation.
What’s actually happening in Chapel Hill #
The Carolina Inn, a stately hotel a short walk from the University of North Carolina campus, will serve as the venue. For two days, ministers from the G20 nations will convene alongside US officials and tech industry leaders to discuss innovation policy, with AI dominating the agenda.
Press access has been confirmed for opening remarks, guest events, a group photo, and a press conference. Registration for media closed on August 28, suggesting the Commerce Department expects significant coverage.
The event falls squarely within the broader priorities the US has set for its G20 presidency this cycle: deregulation, energy security, and technological innovation. Lutnick has spent recent months engaging extensively with AI industry leaders on policy questions, particularly around export controls and strategies to maintain US competitiveness in the global semiconductor and AI landscape.
Why Lutnick, and why now #
Lutnick’s trajectory from Wall Street executive to Commerce Secretary has been one of the more unusual Cabinet stories in recent memory. Before his confirmation, he spent decades running Cantor Fitzgerald and later BGC Group. His pivot into government came with a mandate to promote domestic innovation and manufacturing, a role that has placed him at the intersection of trade policy and technology strategy.
Nvidia’s dominance in AI-grade GPUs has made the company a geopolitical flashpoint. Its chips are subject to export restrictions aimed at limiting adversaries’ access to cutting-edge computing power.
Altman’s OpenAI has been at the center of debates about AI safety, open-source versus proprietary models, and the staggering capital requirements of frontier AI research. The company has raised tens of billions of dollars and is reportedly seeking more.
