I was skeptical about using AI for programming. I still am, but now I am willing to discuss it-and even accept its usability. What changed my mind? The same thing that changed the mind of Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park movie: Mr. John Hammond!
John Hammond was originally the bad guy in Crichton's book (yes, you should read the book too), but in the movie, Hammond is much more complex. He speaks with passion-almost childhood passion. He says that his attraction would "capture the imagination of the entire planet." That phrase has stuck in my mind for over 30 years.
I believe Hammond's attitude played a huge role in convincing Dr. Grant that the cloned dinosaurs were no less real than the fossilized ones (in fact, they proved much more real than he actually wanted!). Imagine a hypothetical salesman Hammond trying to convince Grant with corporate speak: saying the park would make a lot of money, or overhyping it by claiming paleontologists would become extinct-"Who needs paleontologists when we have real dinosaurs?" That salesman version of Hammond would never have gotten Grant on his side.
Do you see the analogy yet?
If you don't, the "salesman Hammond" represents all these big-tech CEOs talking about how profitable AI will be, how much money it will make and how useless programmers are becoming. On the other hand, we have Andrej Karpathy: a real John Hammond.
Karpathy has released YouTube videos explaining how LLMs work, and he does it with genuine passion. He uses simple language-no hype, no buzzwords. He presents this new (and actually magnificent) tool by discussing its strong points as well as its weaknesses. So, Andrej Karpathy, thank you for sharing your passion. You have become my John Hammond!
One last thought: Don't let corporate marketing ruin your passion for technology (like it almost did to me). Learn how this tool works. Learn its advantages and its weaknesses. Use it sparingly when you need it. And don't forget that great power can also be harmful. Don't reject AI without discussion but also don't become just a passive user either. It might not eat you like a dinosaur, but it can certainly consume your creative spirit.
