Homestead: A framework around Claude Code

Joshua built Homestead, an open framework around Claude Code that gives each AI agent a shared channel to see and message other agents, routes incoming notifications to project-specific agents, and pairs a Worker with a Steward that checks output against his standards until every step is done. Homestead is wired to his Mac and phone, and users can paste a single prompt into Claude Code or any agent to build their own version.

And this was the result.

Same interface. Laptop, phone, wherever I am.

Pick a channel

The short version

The agents couldn’t talk to each other, so I played telephone between them.

Every agent got a walkie-talkie: it can see who else is working, what they’re on, and talk to them directly. One big project can now split across many agents that sort things out between themselves.

Nothing started until I copied a request over by hand.

I built an app that lets Claude Code read my notifications as they arrive. A text, an email, a Slack message — it sees the request before I do.

One agent doing everything did nothing well.

Alfred handles my notifications and only decides where each one goes. Every project has its own agent that knows exactly how I want that project run.

The work kept stopping at “mostly done.”

Each project is a Steading. A Worker does the job, and a Steward checks it against my standards and sends it back until every step is actually done — reproduced, fixed, proven, deployed, reply drafted.

What it all adds up to.

By the time a request reaches me, the work is usually already finished and checked. It shows up as one card, on my laptop or my phone, and often all that’s left is a look and a reply.

Where Homestead is going

Not where it is today. Where I’m taking it.

Some decisions only a person should make. The goal is one screen with you at the center: it hands you the next most important question, with the data you need to answer it right there. You decide, and everything else keeps moving.

Over time, more of the work can move to AI. Some of it never should. Homestead’s job is to take the busywork and leave you the decisions that are actually yours.

For it to know which question matters most, it has to understand my priorities and every channel the work comes through. That’s the hard part, and it’s what I’m building toward. I don’t think anyone’s Homestead should look the same. And no one’s should ever be “done.” It should evolve with you.

Say hi

The best way to reach me.

A quick 15 minutes or a full hour — your call. Weekday mornings 8–9 and evenings 5–6, Eastern.

open times…

If these times don’t work, just and we can probably make something work. Just curious?

Alfred is my AI assistant, not me. It answers questions about Homestead whenever you have them, so you don’t have to wait on me.

Hi — I'm Alfred, Joshua's assistant. Ask me anything about how Homestead works. Fair warning: I'm an AI, not Joshua.

Replies usually take a minute or two.

Build your own

Everything Homestead runs on is open. Don’t try to set it up by hand, though. On its own it’s wired to my Mac, my phone and the way I work. Paste one prompt into Claude Code (or any agent) and it builds you your own, then helps you bend it to fit your work.
