HIVE outlines AI expansion plans during earnings call

HIVE Digital Technologies announced a five-year GPU cloud services agreement worth approximately $350 million through its subsidiary BUZZ HPC during its Fiscal Q1 2027 earnings call on August 17. The deal, with an unnamed investment-grade enterprise customer, involves 2,016 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs and is projected to generate about $70 million in annualized recurring revenue, bringing BUZZ HPC's total contracted ARR to around $180 million. HIVE is pursuing a dual-engine strategy, using Bitcoin mining cash flow to fund GPU cloud infrastructure, with a long-term revenue target of $1 billion.

A new $350M GPU cloud contract pushes HIVE's recurring revenue base to $180M and signals a serious pivot toward high-performance computing

Bitcoin mining companies have spent years promising they’d be more than just mining companies. HIVE Digital Technologies is now putting serious money behind that claim.

During its Fiscal Q1 2027 earnings call on August 17, HIVE announced a five-year GPU cloud services agreement worth approximately $350 million through its subsidiary BUZZ HPC. The counterparty is an unnamed investment-grade enterprise customer.

What the deal actually looks like #

The contract centers on the deployment of 2,016 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs, configured in GB300 NVL72 rack-scale systems with InfiniBand networking.

On the revenue side, the agreement is projected to generate approximately $70 million in annualized recurring revenue. Add that to what BUZZ HPC was already carrying, and the subsidiary’s total contracted ARR reaches around $180 million.

Earlier in 2026, HIVE announced a separate $225 million three-year contract, also through BUZZ HPC. The company has now stacked two substantial multi-year commitments in fairly quick succession.

For context on the capital intensity involved, HIVE referenced approximately $185 million for one recent GPU cluster build-out.

The dual-engine strategy taking shape #

HIVE’s data centers run on renewable energy, a legacy of its origins as a crypto miner that sought cheap, clean power in places like Sweden, Iceland, and Paraguay.

Management described the approach as a dual-engine model, using cash flow from Bitcoin mining to fund the build-out of GPU cloud infrastructure.

The long-term revenue target management floated is $1 billion in total revenue. That’s an aspirational number rather than formal guidance, but the contracted ARR trajectory gives it at least some structural scaffolding.

On the infrastructure side, HIVE is building a multi-phase AI gigafactory in the Greater Toronto Area. The facility is expected to be energized by late 2027, with operations beginning in early 2028. Separately, the company is adding substation capacity in Paraguay, with that expansion planned for energization near the end of 2026.
