He emphasizes that AI tools like ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot serve as engineering assistants, not replacements for human judgment, and that curiosity must be paired with ownership to build dependable systems.", "body_md": "Hello DEV Community! 👋\n\nI’m Shahriar Hossain, a software engineer from Dhaka, Bangladesh.\n\nI enjoy building software, but what excites me most is understanding what happens beneath the surface.\n\nWhen I encounter a feature, API, error, or unfamiliar system, my curiosity usually leads to more questions:\n\n• How does the complete request flow work?\n\n• Why was this architecture selected?\n\n• What happens when part of the system fails?\n\n• How should the data be modeled?\n\n• Will this solution remain maintainable as the product grows?\n\n• Are we fixing the real problem—or only hiding its symptoms?\n\nThat desire to explore deeper is what attracted me to software engineering.\n\n**My journey into software engineering**\n\nMy work has taken me through frontend development, backend engineering, SaaS products, IoT systems, automation, databases, cloud deployment, and AI-powered applications.\n\nToday, I am primarily focused on backend systems using technologies such as:\n\n• JavaScript, TypeScript, and Python\n\n• Node.js and Express.js\n\n• MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and Redis\n\n• REST APIs, JWT authentication, and role-based access control\n\n• Docker, AWS EC2, Linux, Nginx, and PM2\n\n• MQTT and real-time IoT data workflows\n\nWorking across different parts of software has helped me understand that becoming a software engineer is not simply about learning more programming languages.\n\nIt is about learning how to analyze problems, make responsible decisions, communicate clearly, and build systems that people can depend on.\n\n**Why I enjoy backend engineering\n**\n\nI enjoy designing APIs, organizing backend modules, modeling data, debugging unexpected behavior, and investigating why a system behaves differently in production.\n\nWhile working on an aquaculture monitoring platform, I handled backend workflows involving live IoT sensor data and MQTT communication.\n\nIt taught me that a production backend needs more than successful responses. It also needs:\n\n• Reliable connection handling\n\n• Payload validation\n\n• Structured error management\n\n• Logging and operational visibility\n\n• Data integrity\n\n• Recovery from failures\n\n• Careful production debugging\n\nBackend engineering often feels like detective work. You follow the evidence through application logic, database records, logs, networks, and integrations until you understand the root cause.\n\nThat process is challenging and deeply enjoyable.\n\n**How AI is changing software development**\n\nAI is now closely connected with modern software engineering.\n\nI use tools such as ChatGPT, Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot to support research, implementation, debugging, code review, refactoring, and documentation.\n\nThese tools can help us move faster, but speed alone does not make software better.\n\nAI can generate code, but an engineer must still ask:\n\n• Is this code correct?\n\n• Is it secure?\n\n• Does it match the existing architecture?\n\n• What assumptions did the AI make?\n\n• Which edge cases are missing?\n\n• Can another engineer maintain it?\n\n• What will happen when it reaches production?\n\nI see AI as an engineering assistant not a replacement for engineering judgment.\n\nIt can reduce repetitive work and help us explore possible solutions. This gives engineers more time to focus on architecture, product requirements, reliability, and the reasoning behind technical decisions.\n\nMy experience building Lex.AI, an AI-powered legal technology project, made this especially clear. Working with retrieval workflows, external AI APIs, context engineering, and structured responses taught me that an intelligent feature is only valuable when the surrounding system is reliable.\n\nThe quality of an AI product depends on more than its model. It also depends on its data, backend architecture, validation, security, monitoring, and human responsibility.\n\n**Curiosity must come with ownership**\n\nCuriosity helps us discover possibilities. Ownership helps us turn those possibilities into dependable solutions.\n\nFor me, ownership means:\n\n• Understanding the requirement before writing code\n\n• Asking questions when something is unclear\n\n• Researching unfamiliar systems\n\n• Investigating root causes instead of applying temporary patches\n\n• Communicating blockers and progress honestly\n\n• Testing assumptions and failure scenarios\n\n• Reviewing AI-generated work carefully\n\n• Taking responsibility for the final result\n\nA task is not truly complete just because the code runs on my machine.\n\nIt should solve the intended problem, respect the project’s architecture, handle expected failures, and remain understandable to the next engineer who works on it.\n\n**What I hope to share on DEV**\n\nI joined DEV to document what I learn and connect with people who enjoy exploring software beyond the surface.\n\nI plan to write about:\n\n• Software engineering lessons from real projects\n\n• Backend development and REST API design\n\n• Node.js, Express.js, and database architecture\n\n• Python automation and structured data processing\n\n• Authentication, authorization, and secure workflows\n\n• Debugging and production problem-solving\n\n• IoT and real-time data systems\n\n• AI-assisted software engineering\n\n• System design and architectural decisions\n\n• The mistakes, discoveries, and lessons behind working solutions\n\nI do not expect to know everything before I start writing.\n\nWriting is part of how I want to learn: by organizing my thoughts, sharing practical experiences, receiving feedback, and improving my understanding.\n\n**Let’s connect**\n\nIf you are interested in software engineering, backend systems, AI-assisted development, architecture, automation, or solving difficult technical problems, I would love to connect and learn from you.\n\nTo start a discussion:\n\nWhat part of software engineering makes you curious enough to keep exploring deeper?\n\nThank you for reading my first DEV post.
